In the wake of the release of the Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan, here’s having a look at the top 5 sports biopics from Bollywood.

Filmmaker Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s sports biopic Maidaan is all set to release in the next few days on April 10. The film is based on the life of India’s celebrated football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, whose character is essayed in the film by Ajay Devgn. There have been a number of sports biopics in Bollywood after the year 2010 onwards.

In the wake of the release of Maidaan, here’s having a look at the top 5 sports biopics to have come out from that period (in order of release dates).

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)

Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, this biographical sports drama is based on the life of the Indian athlete Milkha Singh, also known as the Flying Sikh. Farhan Akhtar delivered a stellar performance in the lead role, capturing Milkha Singh's struggles, triumphs, and journey to becoming a legendary Olympian.

Mary Kom (2014)

Directed by Omung Kumar, this biopic followed the life of the Indian boxer Mary Kom, portrayed by Priyanka Chopra. The film depicts Mary Kom's journey from her humble beginnings in Manipur to becoming a world champion and Olympic bronze medalist. Priyanka Chopra's portrayal of the determined and resilient boxer earned widespread praise.

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

Directed by Neeraj Pandey, this biographical sports film chronicled the life of the former Indian cricket captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sushant Singh Rajput portrayed Dhoni, capturing his journey from a young boy in Ranchi to leading the Indian cricket team to victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

Dangal (2016)

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is based on the real-life story of the Phogat sisters, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, and their father Mahavir Singh Phogat, who coached them to become world-class wrestlers. Aamir Khan delivered a remarkable performance as Mahavir Singh Phogat, showcasing his dedication to his daughters’ success against societal norms and gender biases.

83 (2021)

Directed by Kabir Khan, 83 tells the story of the Indian cricket team's historic win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, played by Ranveer Singh. The film celebrates the team's journey, camaraderie, and triumph against all odds, capturing a significant moment in Indian sports history. The casting of the rest of the actors and their performances were also appreciated.
