So, let's explore this creative trailblazer's inspirations, design philosophies, and the incredible journey that brought her to the public eye. The secrets of Arya Giri's extraordinary achievement on the huge stage of Paris Fashion Week were revealed in this conversation with Bollywood Hungama.
Can you please introduce yourself and share a bit about your background in the fashion industry?
I’m a creative visionary and entrepreneur. I was exposed at a young age to weaver communities, through my royal lineage. I strive to revive traditions and create a space of global cultural perspectives on identity. I graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts Singapore in Fashion Media and Industries.
Having contributed to two published books under the Additional Secretary to Former President Pranab Mukherjee, worked under Senator Hirai Takuya at the Japanese National Diet; and interned at Fuji Xerox Singapore in the Marketing Department, Ogilvy and Mather Bangalore, and more I set to harness my diverse experiences and apply them to the blooming trajectory of my company.
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your collection showcased at Paris Fashion Week?
The inspiration of the collection, like most of our collections, came from my introspection on how we consume & break down our understanding of culture, and in turn our understanding of ourselves. I had this seed of fascination from Tagore’s hatched away scriptures, through the evolution of the concept that seed morphed into our own narrative.
How do you typically find inspiration for your designs? Any specific sources or experiences?
Every collection embarks on a new odyssey of exploring identity through a lens of a diaspora persona. The Arya Giri individual is majestic, incandescent and effervescent. They value quality, history, and breaking the rules. And by that right, a great deal of inspiration comes from consuming the environment around us, and introspection.
I’ve had the privilege of growing up across the globe, and with that came a plethora of experiences that had to do with my understanding of the nuances of various cultures, practices, and the like. Striking a fascination in me from a very young age, this has bloomed into the core of the brand today.
Are there any particular themes or messages you aimed to convey through your Paris Fashion Week collection?
Ultimately, this collection is about the magnitude of a line. From the very moment we begin to exist we are some format of a line. As we evolve through life the written word, gestures, and internal membrane all formulate what we consider the ‘self’.
As we grow, we are conditioned to draw lines through our mistakes, hatch them away. This collection draws inspiration from Tagore’s hatched scriptures to further the idea of how embracing our mistakes will only make us that much more unique. The line becomes us.
Could you walk us through your creative process from concept to the final runway show?
Like most creative processes, this collection began many months ago as a seed of thought. Giving it time to marinate and come to fruition in its most authentic format, we continued to work at the color story, silhouette experimentation, hand-embroidery masterclasses, and experimentation with our hand-loom weaves. As the puzzle pieces began to slot into each other the collection started to take form. This is also an incredibly special collection as it was our first time dabbling with accessorises and footwear with hand-embroidery at its core as well.
What techniques and materials did you predominantly use in this collection?
Everything AG has a keen focus on handloom and hand-embroidery; empowering our hand- embroiderers with a diversity of techniques re-contextualised with modernity to increase the ease of use. This collection is truly special because we’ve developed one-of-a-kind motifs employing ancient embroidery techniques against our specially woven linen satins in a beautiful trans-seasonal chocolate and foam colour story. Utilising kantha, aari, cutwork, and other skilful hand techniques, as well as pure gold zari thread, we’ve built out a collection that has nods to the past in a modern light.
How do you balance innovation and wearability in your designs?
I think as designers we are quick to believe innovation must always be correlated to a pioneering cut or style. I believe that AG is special because we explore the concept of innovation through fuss-free silhouettes that have innovative hand-embroideries. Employing ancient crafts and re-contextualising them with novel motifs and construction approaches. When you think of an AG piece you imagine something you don’t have to worry about styling, and easily allows you to add meaning to your everyday outfit and keep craft alive.
What was the most memorable moment for you during Paris Fashion Week?
There were so many, but if I had to choose one, I’d say the most memorable moment would’ve been as every single model walked back beaming and I stepped into the crowd and could see they truly enjoyed what they just saw. It’s a glimpse of a moment that so beautifully culminates months of arduous thinking, strategizing, and building this labor of love.
How did you feel seeing your designs on the runway in such a prestigious event?
I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to showcase my work at Paris Fashion Week. More than that, I’m honoured to hear feedback from individuals itching to get their hands on certain pieces and individuals truly loving the details of the collection.
Like most other creatives, for me, design and fashion are not about that one moment alone but what they culturally represent. I could sit for hours on end discussing these topics about any brand with so much joy.
Were there any unexpected challenges you faced during the preparation for the show?
Almost any show must have challenges and bumps; that makes the journey worth travelling.
What are your plans for the future? Any upcoming projects or collaborations you can share with us?
We have so much in store that we are stoked to share with you! The commercial line of this runway collection, The Line Becomes Us, will hit the racks soon - we’re excited to share that with you. Also, plenty of small surprises along the way!
How do you envision the evolution of your brand in the coming years?
At the crux, I envision this brand evolving into a larger expansive community of like-minded individuals curious about culture, identity, and how we place meaning on ‘things’. I’d like us to explore a plethora of mediums to communicate that to you and become increasingly more accessible and available for the audience to enjoy the work we create. We’re a global brand, so you can look forward to seeing us globally of course.
Is there a specific goal or milestone you aspire to achieve in your fashion career?
Plenty! That’s what keeps us going. The pace at which the world is expanding on its acceptance and support of artisanship is increasing, but is outdone by the pace at which craft communities are shrinking. My goal is to protect craft and ensure the techniques survive in a manner that is more easily consumable. It is up to our generation to keep the arts alive, and this is my humble attempt at doing so. I’d like to be global, competitive, and always exciting for our audience, I suppose.
What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers who aim to showcase their work at prestigious events like Paris Fashion Week?
I would advise them to continually hone in on their craft, something all of us should never stop doing. Explore your opportunities and be intentional and meaningful in your every decision.
How important is it, in your opinion, for young designers to find their unique style and voice in the industry?
I believe it’s imperative for young designers to find their style & voice and continue to develop it. The goal is to be ever-growing, always developing the format and the efficacy of how the message you’re conveying is reaching your audience.
