The trailer of the much-awaited Punjabi film, Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di, backed by Jio Studios, Humble Motion Pictures and Panorama Studios was held at a multiplex in Mumbai on August 14. The event was memorable for several reasons. The chief guest Rohit Shetty spoke highly of the film while the team also raised some important points. Writer-director-actor Gippy Grewal, however, took the cake, as he talked about his bond with Aamir Khan.
Gippy Grewal said, “I usually write all my films quickly – within 4-5 hours. Once Aamir bhai told me that he had started work on Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) and that he wanted a Punjabi writer. He also asked if I’d like to come on board. Mujhe pata tha ki Aamir paaji bahut time lagate hai (laughs). I told him, ‘Main toh itna accha nahin likhta. Main aapko ek writer de deta hoon’!”
He added, “3-4 days after the writer joined, I asked him how was he doing. He told me that Aamir had taken him to his farmhouse in Panchgani. I asked Aamir if the writer was doing his job well. He replied, ‘Haan, haan, bahut accha hai. Sahi kar raha hai. Kamaal hai ji banda’. I asked the writer, ‘Tu aisa kya kar raha hai?’. He replied, ‘Nothing much. We discussed the script the whole day. The next day, when I brought the changes, he would reply, ‘Nahin, hum waise hi karte hai (what was originally decided)’. This went on for a long time. We don’t have such a process in Punjabi cinema.”
Towards the end of the event, Kumar Mangat revealed that he never replies on WhatsApp or on e-mail and that he prefers to pick up the phone and talk. Gippy Grewal, in reply, said he relies on voice notes as his English is weak.
He then revealed, “Aamir bhai once sent me a long message that too in English. I didn’t know him that well. So, I was wondering, ‘Such a big artist has messaged me. How should I reply?’.”
He continued, “It was 1:30 am. I called one guy in Punjab who was well-versed in English. I told him the message I had got and how I wanted its reply to be. I told him ‘Tu likh ke bhej’. He sent me the message in English. I then asked him to add a few more lines which he promptly added and re-sent. I forwarded it to Aamir Khan. By then, it was 2-2:30 am. I was about to go to sleep when Aamir bhai replied. By then, the guy who helped me had gone to sleep. Then I had to find someone else to reply to his second message (laughs).”
He also said, “For the next 1 or ½ years, I took help from people to reply to Aamir bhai’s messages. It was only when we became friends that I told him, ‘Main kisi se likhwata tha’! From that day, I started sending him voice notes.”
Along with Gippy Grewal, the trailer launch of Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di was graced by Jasmin Bhasin, Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi, Prince Kanwaljeet Singh, Jyoti Deshpande, President Media and Content Business, RIL, Jio Studios and producer Mr. Kumar Mangat. At the trailer launch, Jyoti Deshpande got a round of applause when she confessed that she was infected with polio when she was six months old and how it didn’t deter her from succeeding in life.
Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di releases in cinemas on September 13.
