Filmmaker Anurag Basu has addressed ongoing speculation about singer Arijit Singh’s future plans following the latter’s recent announcement of his retirement from playback singing. In a conversation with BBC Hindi, Basu shared personal insights into Singh’s interests beyond music, including a lesser-known anecdote from the set of Barfi! (2012).
The disclosure comes amid widespread reactions to Singh’s decision to step away from recording playback songs—a move that has triggered discussions about what his next creative phase might involve. Fans and industry observers on social platforms have speculated that the singer could explore film direction, though there has been no official statement from Singh confirming this path.
“The world was in shock after learning about Arijit Singh’s decision, but I was not at all surprised or shocked,” Basu said, describing his long acquaintance with the artist. “I have known him for a long time and feel he is very talented and wishes to do more apart from singing.”
Basu went on to recall that during the production of Barfi!, Singh had once expressed a desire to be more involved behind the scenes. “He asked me to make him an assistant in Barfi!” the director said, framing the request as evidence of Singh’s broader curiosity about filmmaking.
Singh’s playback retirement note, shared on his private X account earlier this week, explained that the choice was the result of “several reasons” and not impulsive. He wrote about a restlessness that led him to rethink his creative pursuits, saying, “I get bored pretty quick… I need to do some other music to live.”
He also mentioned his interest in creating space for emerging singers, adding, “Another reason is I am excited to hear some singer come up and give me real motivation.”
