In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, producer Bhushan Kumar explained that making a large-scale war film today is fundamentally different from regular commercial projects. He pointed out that after the success of Border (1997), very few films in the armed forces genre have managed to become major hits, and this has made producers hesitant to invest heavily in such films.
“Nothing can just pass off now with poor quality,” he said, noting that audience expectations for technical values and execution automatically push up the costs of action films. The film was produced in house by T-Series together with JP Films, and although an initial budget was set, it was revised upwards when the creative team justified additional needs during production. “It wasn’t made just by looking at the mathematics,” Kumar said. “We didn’t do those calculations on the calculator – that I will get my table profit, or I will break even at this point, and all those things.”
Instead, he explained, decisions were made through discussions with the director and crew about what was necessary for better storytelling, whether additional shooting days were required or certain sequences needed a larger scale. According to Kumar, each budget increase was amicably agreed upon after understanding the creative justification behind it. “We produced it with a lot of emotion,” he said, adding that the film’s vision was never compromised despite the financial escalations.
Today, as Border 2 continues to show strong box office momentum and audience appreciation, the producer believes the emotional rewards, including respect from viewers and feedback inside theatres, validate the risk of stepping beyond rigid budgeting rules.
