With more than 500 films behind him, one may think that Anupam Kher doesn’t really have many new roles to explore after a career that has spanned over three and a half decades. However, looks like there is a lot more that can still find a place in his repertoire. One such role is that of a vigilante that he is playing in this week’s release One Day: Justice Delivered.
“In A Wednesday, he played a top cop who is on the right side of the law and challenges the vigilante character played by Naseeruddin Shah. Things are different in One Day. He plays a judge, who does things the right way, just like he did in A Wednesday. However, once retired, he gets into a zone similar to that of Naseeruddin Shah, which is that of a common man turning into a vigilante. It is this interesting mix which makes the part that he plays really interesting,” comments our source.
For Anupam Kher, it was good to step in as a central protagonist part all over again after enacting the part of India’s former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Desai in The Accidental Prime Minister.
“He had to go subtle in that film. That was the need of the character as considering the biopic, he couldn’t go filmy. There was no such restriction in One Day though. He has a liberating part to play in the film as it has the core theme of good versus evil,” says a source attached to the film, “The role requires society’s angst to be conveyed on screen and even if certain acts that the character played by Kher saab may seem questionable, one has to understand that it is about justice being delivered, come what may.”
For director Ashok Nanda, it was a dream come true to not just work with Anupam Kher but to have an amazing ensemble cast available to him in the form of Kumud Mishra, Zakir Hussain, Rajesh Sharma and veteran actress Zarina Wahab.
“It is always a pleasure when you have yet to work with actors like these who still want to bring something new to the scene despite being around for so long,” says Nanda, “Kher saab has been superb as always. You give him a scene and then rest assured, you know it is going to come out brilliantly. Same is true for all the other wonderful actors that I have worked with in One Day. There are so many newspaper headlines around crime that you come across which make you wonder whether true justice would ever be delivered. This film is my way of trying to get that for the audiences in an entertaining way, even if that’s just for screen.”
We look forward to catching that for ourselves.
