For Anubhav Sinha, the toughest part of directing Assi, his new brilliant portrait of a marriage eclipsed by the wife’s sexual assault, was how to explain to the boy what his screen mother was going through.

“This is the toughest part of explaining a family trauma to a child actor. Luckily, I had an absolutely brilliant child actor Advik Jaiswal. He was, obviously, not told about his screen mother’s gang rape. He was told his screen mother, played with exceptional empathy by Kani Kusruti, had undergone a very serious accident which no one was supposed to talk about,” revealed Anubhav.
Luckily the child was able to grasp the enormity of the situation.
“A lot of the credit for the boy’s convincing performance goes to Kani Kusruti. Her rapport with Advik was so mature and yet so discreet, it fell like a mother hiding her trauma from her son and yet reaching out to him for empathy. When such an incident happens, the children suffer the most. They are unable to process the tragedy,” said Anubhav whose Assi is about to rip off the mask of hypocrisy that covers the face of rape in this country.
