Veteran Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor has opened up about turning down offers to join political life after the release of his 2001 political drama Nayak: The Real Hero, saying he wasn’t ready to take up public service without complete sincerity and commitment.

In a conversation with The Indian Express Hindi editor Saurabh Dwivedi, Kapoor recalled how political parties approached him following the film’s success. The drama, in which he played a television cameraperson who becomes the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a short period, made a lasting impact on audiences and sparked interest from the political world. “There were a few discussions, but I nipped it in the bud,” Kapoor said, explaining that offers rarely came directly and were usually made through intermediaries, hinting that those parties understood his reluctance.
Kapoor stressed that entering politics requires full dedication, something he felt he could not offer at that stage in his life. “If I do it, I have to do it very sincerely and genuinely. But I don’t have it within me to give it my full commitment,” he added, emphasizing his desire to give 100 per cent to whatever role he takes on. Interestingly, his hesitation extended beyond political office.
After gaining global recognition for his role in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, he revealed that the United Nations approached him to serve as a brand ambassador. However, Kapoor said he chose not to accept that role either, explaining, “I didn’t want to use it as a photo op,” suggesting he was not interested in symbolic positions without meaningful work. Instead of stepping into governance or global advocacy, Kapoor said he remains focused on his acting career and continuing to grow as an artist.
