Amitabh Bachchan recalls the struggles of his father faced because of inter-caste marriage; says, “Getting married in a different caste was called a sin during that time”

In a question related to Sarojini Naidu, Amitabh Bachchan shared an anecdote about how the nightingale of India helped his father during his tough times.

We all know that Amitabh Bachchan often shares some of his fondest memories on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15 aka KBC 15. The loving host never leaves an opportunity to give his fans a glimpse of his life in each episode, and in the recent one, he recalled an interesting incident involving his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s marriage to his mother Teji Bachchan, wherein, he also revealed that his community had shunned his father for marrying inter-caste since the legendary actor’s mother was Sikh.

Recently, during one of the episodes of KBC, Amitabh Bachchan quizzed a contestant named Yojana for a prize money of Rs. 3,50,000 about ‘Which poet inspired Begum Akhtar to take up a career as a performer’. The options given were Vijay Lakshmi Pandit, Mahadevi Verma, Sarojini Naidu, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. After using two lifelines including video call and audience poll, the contestant managed to respond ‘Sarojini Naidu’ and ended up winning the prize money.

Recalling an interesting incident involving Sarojini Naidu, Amitabh Bachchan opened up about how she knew his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and was a fan of him. For the unversed, Harivansh Rai Bachchan is one of the most famous Indian poets and his works are celebrated by many across the world even today. Amitabh said, “I am getting a little hesitant to say this but she was also a big fan of my ‘Babuji’. My ‘Babuji’ had done an inter caste marriage. My mother, Teji, was from a Sikh family. When we lived in Allahabad, getting married in a different caste over there was called a sin during that time. So people fought against my father when he took my mother to Allahabad."

He went on to reminisce about how Sarojini Naidu had taken a stand as he added, "Sarojini Naidu was the first person who consoled him. She introduced him to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who used to live in Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. I still remember the way she had introduced my father. She said, ‘meet the poet and his poetry’.”

Kaun Banega Crorepati 15 airs from Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.
