Alia Bhatt recently shared an emotional insight into her acting journey at the prestigious Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The actress revealed that two roles have left an indelible mark on her heart are —Gangubai from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) and Veera from Imtiaz Ali’s Highway (2014).
In the past, Alia has often spoken about Gangubai Kathiawadi and have described the experience as ‘transformative’. The film, based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, narrates the story of a young girl from Kathiawad who is thrust into the world of prostitution and later rises to become a powerful figure in Mumbai’s underworld. Alia’s portrayal of Gangubai earned her widespread acclaim and multiple awards, cementing her status as one of Bollywood’s most versatile performers.
On the other hand, Highway remains equally close to her heart for its raw and liberating narrative. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film follows Veera, a young woman who discovers freedom and self-identity after being kidnapped. Alia’s nuanced performance in this road drama showcased her ability to dive deep into complex emotions, making it a career-defining role early on.
Looking ahead, Alia is set to reunite with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the much-anticipated Love & War, slated for release in the first half of 2026. The film promises a stellar cast, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal alongside Alia. Additionally, she will headline YRF’s spy thriller Alpha, sharing screen space with Sharvari, Bobby Deol, and Anil Kapoor.
