The excessively private Akshaye Khanna brought in his birthday quietly, alone without family or friends. This is the way he has always celebrated his birthdays. The success of Dhurandhar has made him even more reclusive. Khanna refuses to engage in any social discourse on the film.
It is also said that Khanna refuses to be seen naturally bald on screen. “That is true,” friend writer-director Rumy Jafry revealed. “He is not willing to work wigless even if it adds an act of artificiality. Call it his only vanity. But that’s the way it is.”
Akshaye Khanna elected to go off press after Dhurandhar. Not that he was ever media-friendly. But earlier he was not inaccessible. Now he is hermetic in his non-visibility. Dhurandhar has turned the table for him.
“That’s what he thinks and I hope he’s right,” said a director who has worked with Akshaye in the past. “But no more. I don’t think I would be (able to) work with him again. Akshaye has definitely changed after Dhurandhar. Earlier he was a private person. Now he is inaccessible.”
Writer-filmmaker Rumy Jafry, who is close friend of Akshaye, disagreed. “He has not changed with the success of Dhurandhar. He always was the same. Fiercely private and very selective. You can’t convince him to do something he doesn’t believe in.”
At 51, Khanna remains irrevocably single. He once told a friend he can’t imagine sharing his life and wardrobe space with anyone else.
In a throwback with this writer, Akshaye had demolished the institution of marriage. “I don't believe in the institution of marriage. A pundit predicted I'd definitely get married in 2009. He said he can write it in his blood, ‘Iss saal teri shaadi pukki’. I was horrified. The fact is, marriage is just a legal piece of paper. I don't see why the government needs to get involved in what two people do with their lives. It's none of their business.”
Akshaye Khanna is not known to be close to anyone, not even his brother Rahul Khanna and his stepbrother Sakshi Khanna.
Being an overnight star seems to have tickled his fancy. But Akshaye Khanna is clever enough to know one success doesn’t change an actor’s fortune.
