Akshaye Khanna, who turns a year older today, gave his best performance in your Gandhi My Father. What was it like directing him?
He was an absolute delight. He got under the skin of the character and was breathing life into it every moment of his presence on screen. He was emotionally accessible and intellectually attentive to chisel his performance.
Was he your first choice to play Mahatma Gandhi’s son Harilal?
He was the first and last choice. The entire credit goes to Anil Kapoor for his absolute faith and respect in Akshaye as an actor.
Was Akshaye Khanna able to do complete justice to his character?
Harilal, who had a troubled relationship with his father Mahatma Gandhi, is a complex character with multiple layers. It traverses more than four decades of his life. Akshaye’s emotional investment to play the part was palpable. He has made Harilal memorable in cinema.
Akshaye has a reputation for being moody. How difficult was it direct him?
Working with him was sheer joy. We had some challenging shooting conditions and he was a true trooper. I am carrying lifetime memories of our journey in this film.
What did you think of Akshaye in Dhurandhar?
It is an audaciously scintillating performance. You can’t have enough of him. You want more. This is one of those rare moments in cinema where the antagonist completely overwhelms the protagonist and the audiences are rooting for him. It’s a Gabbar-plus moment.
