Befikre, Kahaani 2, Dear Zindagi, Force 2, Rock On 2 - What’s common between these films, other than the fact that many of these are sequels to some of the popular films? Well, most of these have underperformed both critically as well as commercially. Either audiences have not stepped in at all [Rock On 2] or have been indifferent [Force 2, Kahaani 2] or have left underwhelmed [Dear Zindagi] or have been severely disappointed [Befikre]. No wonder, none of these have turned out to be a good commercial success.

Though 100 crore club is indeed a benchmark today [at least Dear Zindagi and Befikre were expected to move in there], none of these has managed to make that mark. As a matter of fact Kahaani 2 has done 50% business of Kahaani and Rock On 2 has been a mega disaster with 30% business of Rock On. As for Force 2, it has been at the same level as Force, albeit arriving four years later.

So what has really plagued the situation at Bollywood?

Well, the fact that majority are interested in making ‘projects’ instead of ‘telling stories’ that indeed connect with the audiences. Kahaani had a soul, Rock On had its chutzpah and well Aditya Chopra had made a classic in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Compare these with Kahaani 2, Rock On 2 and Aditya’s Befikre and you know that so much is lacking big time. The very connect with the audience is missing and stories being told are the kind which are alien to most part of the country. Take Dear Zindagi for example - How many actually relate to therapy sessions between Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt?

This is where Dangal promises a lot. Other than the fact that ‘Brand Aamir Khan’ is at play here, it promises that much needed ‘connect’ with the audience. Set the film in rural/small town India, tell an incredible real life story, cast actors who look like characters, stay focused on the narrative which is true to the stage and setting, don’t fall into the temptation of an item song and voila, you are there ready to roll with a film where your leading man can be seen with a paunch and no one questions the look at all. What reverberates is the sound of ‘Dangal Dangal’ and something that promises a great deal on December 23.

Will the jinx be broken? Well, looks like. This could well be the perfect Christmas gift for those who are waiting for a biggie at Bollywood before bidding adieu to 2016.
