Aamir Khan had a fascinating and entertaining conversation with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, during the Lokmat Maharashtrian Of The Year 2026 held at the iconic Gateway of India in Mumbai. Aamir raised the issue of social media addiction and corruption.

Aamir Khan said, “I have this point of view and I may or may not be right. But I feel that social media has had a deep impact on all of us. It has a lot of advantages. But there was a time when I used to read 2-3 books in just one week. I would read while I was on my way or even while having breakfast. Despite my hectic schedule, I used to read books. Now, I am wasting time on YouTube or watching Instagram Reels! I also know that this is not good for me. But the algorithm is such that they keep showing engaging videos to you and you get lost in them. It’s like being hypnotized.”
Aamir added, “Hamari toh umar ho gayi hai, but the youngsters can get impacted deeply. I am not against it but we need to think about it. There are many countries that are implementing the rule that children under 16 can’t use social media. I wonder how it’ll be implemented but the thought process is correct as their minds are getting corrupted. Unke brains ki re-wiring ho rahi hai.”
Devendra Fadnavis said, “Some states in the country are contemplating to bring some curbs for children under 16. I won’t say whether or not we would ban, but I agree that we need to think of solutions to minimize or stop the ill-effects of social media for those under the age of 16. Maharashtra would try to do so.”
Aamir then said, “I was reading ‘Arthashastra’, which some people also call ‘Chanakyaneeti’. Chanakya ji wrote this 1800 or 2000 years ago about good qualities and responsibilities of kings and the common man. While reading the book, it made me realize that humans haven’t changed in these 2000 years. When you go through the crime list mentioned in the book, you’ll say ‘Yeh crime uss waqt bhi chal raha tha’! The biggest challenge in front of the king was how to handle a corrupt minister or administrator.”
He continued, “So, corruption is not a modern problem or an Indian problem. It’s a human quality to move away from integrity and move towards corruption. Aur corruption sirf paise ka nahin hota. Today, we read every day about the Epstein Files. That is another level of corruption…total mental corruption.”
Aamir also remarked, “Some years ago, I went to Japan. I was there for a week or two and I tried to tip many people, from different strata of society. Not a single one of them accepted the tip. Kiran ji (Kiran Rao) and I went to a karaoke bar. It was run by an 18-year-old boy. I decided to tip him. Kiran ji told me, ‘Why are you wasting your time? He won’t accept it’. But I reasoned, ‘He’s 18. He might need it’. But he also didn’t accept it! Japan ke log tip nahin lete, toh woh ghoos kya lenge!”
