en Bollywood News 5 TV serials to look forward to if you are not a fan of usual saas-bahu drama

Ranging from quirky to romantic to family, Indian television offers a wide variety of shows. While the audience for these shows differ there are many who prefer to stay away from the usual saas-bahu drama on television. But if you are not a fan of those soaps, then here are the promos of five different series which discusses very different topics from the usual drama on television.

5 TV serials to look forward to if you are not a fan of usual saas-bahu drama

5 TV serials to look forward to if you are not a fan of usual saas-bahu drama

1. Harphool Mohini
Channel: Colors
Date: June 13
A hattakatta jaat from Punjab and a daredevil girl from Kerala – will they ever make it to their happily ever after. As clichéd as it sounds, do you know what is different about it? Two families who are ready to look past these differences and accept each other’s culture the way it is! When a loving Supriya Shukla is happy to have a good-natured daughter-in-law like Mohini or a thrilled ‘ladki ka baap’ Pankaj Vishnu is glad that his Haryanvi son-in-law is not into gold or dowry. In tough times like today when language can lead to debates, a series that celebrates those same differences is a welcome change. The show will kick off on June 13 on Colors and stars Shagun Sharma as well as Zebby Singh in lead roles.

2. Appnapan
Channel: Sony TV
Date: June 15
A rather serious take on dysfunctional families, Appnapan talks about an estranged couple played by Rajashree Thakur of Saloni fame Saat Phere and Cezannne Khan aka Anurag Basu from Kasauti Zindagi Kii. Their children are separated from each other, as some of them live with their mother and the other with their father but both of them express dissent in staying with them. The children often express their longing for their missing parent that has the parents questioning their separation and its impact on their kids. Living two different lifestyles, where one strives to make ends meet and other is spoilt for choice, will the children be responsible for bringing their parents back together once again? Appnapan will premiere on Sony Television from June 15 onwards.

3. Anandiba aur Emily
Channel: Star Plus
Date: June 27
My bad to have included this in the list because it is about saas and bahu! But not the one where the daughter-in-law turns into a fly. It is the one where ‘Dhokla’ and ‘Donut’ (as referred in the promo) try to live together under the same roof. The show reminds of the 90s popular comedy series Tu Tu Main Main but with a twist. What happens when a Gujarati boy brings home a ‘gori mem’ aka foreigner daughter-in-law as his wife and she has to deal with the house matriarch Anandi Baa. Amidst constant jibes between the saas-bahu, a helpless son, will the two of them grow to appreciate each other’s differences? The show airs on Star Plus from June 27 onwards with Mishkat Verma, Jazzy Ballerini, and Kanchan Gupta in lead roles.

4. Channa Mereya
Channel: Star Bharat
Date: July 5
Being a comeback venture of Karan Wahi on television, the show will feature the never-before-seen couple of the Remix actor and D4 actress Niyati Fatnani. While Karan has been busy with films, the actor, who has tried his stint even on reality shows as well as OTT, will be a part of the series after a long time. The actor will be seen in the role of businessman Aditya Raj whereas Niyati Fatnani will be seen in the role of Ginni Grewal, the owner of a dhaba. Ginni’s only dream is for her dhaba to run successfully as it is the only legacy left behind by her father. She believes in her dad’s advice – ‘sabse vadda vyapar par ginni putar, usse bhi vadda pyaar’ (business is the most important in the world but Ginni, my child, something that’s more important than that is love). When Aditya approaches her for buying her dhabba, she refuses adding that no money can buy her little dhabba. The story of an independent woman with small dreams and heart full of love - Will her self-respect, resolve, and strength make Aditya believe in love?

5. Bahut Pyaar Karte Hain
Channel: Star Bharat
Date: TBA
Unlike what the title suggests, this show is not about romance but it is about love – love between a mother and a daughter. Single parenthood is one of the toughest choices made by parents and this show features a strong woman named Indu Raina who has brought up her daughter Zoon with self-confidence. During a school interview, when she is asked what is father’s name, a bold Indu asks the principal to write her name in the column, adding that she is the mother and father of the little girl. What is shown beautifully is the confidence in little Zoon who seems to have braces on her legs but despite that, has a polite and bubbly nature. Hopefully this show will not succumb to the age old dramatization of Indian television shows. Starring Sayli Salunkhe, Kiara Sadh in lead roles, let’s see what this Star Bharat show has to offer.
