Freedom of expression is an important right for everybody. But it is extremely necessary to develop a sense of self-censorship. Regarding television shows, censorship is extremely essential. If you are inclined for adult content, then the shows should be scheduled for late night slots. For instance, horror shows are slotted in the late night slots.
There is nothing wrong with making shows with adult content, as we have come of age. But we are still living in a country which is quite conservative, though we may be very modern in our approach. India is a country which has got its own cultural values. We still live in joint families. So the makers must be willing to take the late night slots which is a worldwide phenomenon.
Regarding the controversy surrounding The Dirty Picture's telecast, with the Censor Board accepting the film with 52 cuts and then subsequently asking that film to come after 11 pm is a matter of debate. But instead of a debate, this situation demands a solution. I propose that when you are shooting a film and you know very well that this film will cater to a certain class of adult audience, you can easily take alternative shots for certain scenes. These shots can be used in the film while telecasting it on satellite channels or Doordarshan. During the making, it is easier for a producer to take alternative shots which can be re-censored easily.
Moreover, during every single programme on television, broadcasters mention in a ticker, which says that if any content is found objectionable, it should be reported. This clearly establishes that broadcasters are also willing to take the responsibility. Therefore, self-regulation is a must.
