Filmmakers have often utilized their say and power in the industry to launch their sons/daughters/grandsons/nephews/nieces as heroes or heroines. Many a time, it worked and gave birth to superstars. Rishi Kapoor made his debut as lead hero in Raj Kapoor’s Bobby, a trendsetter of its times. Sanjay Dutt too had a dream debut with Rocky, produced and directed by Sunil Dutt. More recently, Hrithik Roshan catapulted to stardom with his first film Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, directed by papa Rakesh Roshan while Imran Khan was launched by mamu Aamir Khan in the super-hit Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. On the flipside, there have been films which were in many ways literally a ‘launch vehicle’ of actors. Story, script and direction can go out of the window…what is important is to prove that ‘apne chokre ko acting aati hai’! Qasam Se Qasam Se is a case in point! The story of the movie: Rohan (Azim Rizvi) is extremely popular among his group of friends in the college. He mysteriously has 7-8 credit cards and he makes good use of it to treat his friends. He gets free food from the college canteen run by the eccentric but kind-hearted Mamu (Satish Kaushik). Enter Faith (Faith) and Rohan falls for her. Faith too starts liking him but there’s a hitch. Rohan’s friend Vijay (Faraaz) too has the hots for Faith and he’s unable to see the lovebirds together. He provokes his father, DCP Mahadik (Ashwin Kaushal) into arresting Rohan and even convinces him to kill Rohan in a fake encounter! When that doesn’t happen, a dead-man infected with HIV comes to Vijay’s rescue! Watch Qasam Se Qasam Se to find out how! As aforementioned, Qasam Se Qasam Se was in a way a kind of a ‘showreel’ of Azim and to prove that he can act and be a ‘hero’. And hence, he gets to do all – he fools around with pals, rides a bike, maska lagaos Mamu, dances, sings, says cheesy dialogues to Faith, threatens his rival, gets beaten up, kicks, punches, shouts, cries and much more! In today’s times when viewers have made it clear that they require a clear and swift narrative with focus on the main story, Qasam Se Qasam Se goes the other way. Most sequences of the first half have no connection with the plot. There’s a song picturised on Mamu, two buffoons in the hero’s group tear off each other’s clothes and yeah…at one point, the film turns spooky as well! I have seen many Z-grade movies and yet Qasam Se Qasam Se put me into deep shock, especially it's two sequences. One – a scene required a huge crowd gathering, riots and utter chaos to indicate how people are angry with Rohan’s arrest. Being a small-budget film, that wasn’t possible and hence the makers straightaway lifted the riot scenes from Anil Kapoor-starrer Nayak and presented to the viewers! Two – the entire finale of the film involving HIV and how it gets spread to a significant character in the film is utter nonsense. At present, even small kids are well-averse with the facts and myths regarding AIDS but sadly, the makers ain’t! However, Azim deserves praise. Many star-sons take their debut film for granted and give disastrous performances. In that context, Azim is much better and did show spark in several scenes. Faith, too, is beautiful. Mukesh Tiwari as the cop as usual does fine. Satish Kaushik disappoints because of his character and over-acting. The parents of the actors, as told by my friends, are all from the TV Show ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ and the guy who played Azim’s dad raised hell lot of laughs, but for the wrong reasons! From the actors who played Azim’s friends, I am only aware of Maaz Ahmed Khan and I honestly believed that he was quite decent! The film also stars Rakhi Sawant (Delnaz Doodhwala) who was completely over-the-top and fails to evoke laughter. The biggest disappointment in the film was Omkar Das Manikpuri. The actor moved the audiences with his sensitive performance in PEEPLI [Live] but in Qasam Se Qasam Se, he loses all respect. The manner in which he meets our hero, turns into a ‘cool guy’ and becomes a part of the group is bewildering! Shailendra-Sayanti’s music has its charm but one fails to notice because of the haphazard and unnecessary placement of the songs in the narrative. As for the direction-script-story-dialogues, no comments! On the whole, Qasam Se Qasam Se is plain bad. And the makers call it a film ‘based on the thoughts of 220 million students’! Moreover, the synopsis of the film in its official website, with regards to its climax, reads the following: ‘The story takes a SHARP turn and from here unfolds a horror truth….which will prove to be the BIGGEST BLACK SCAR on the face of HUMANITY. A climax so gruesome, it will write a new chapter in the history of world cinema’! Yeah, right! https://fenilandbollywood.com/2012/06/22/movie-review-qasam-se-qasam-se-by-fenil-seta/

Priorities for Qasam Se Qasam Se are clearly defined: More than focusing on the nitty gritties of film making, the movie is a launch pad for Azim, son of daddy-with-the-dough, producer Nazim Rizvi. Now, Azim does deliver... for starters. But does that mean it's okay to make a film full of humourless one liners, a never ending emotional drama and a will-the-love-birds-won't-the-love-birds ever be together suspense? With so much on the platter, the movie seems to be lost in transition: Who is it catering to! Is it the youngsters? There is a student movement fighting for justice that barely seems to go beyond a few shots. Is it about reiterating the fact that love fears no one? The lovey dovey pair is out against one and all... even death. Or is it AIDS? Surprisingly, the movie begins with Professor Dilnaaz Doodhwala quizzing students on what the acronym stands for. The answers are bound to shock you. And so is the teacher (and her moves in class) -- Rakhi Sawant. So while the love birds are at it making merry, walking out of their respective homes, getting bashed up by the influential daddy and his hit men... you are actually left wondering where all this is leading to. Do you want to know? No, not after twelve odd songs scattered between College Day, Rose Day, Chocolate Day, Farewell Day... and god knows what day. Too long. Too tiring... kasam se!
