During the peak of the second world war, Japan and Britain are at strategic crossroads for…
During the peak of the second world war, Japan and Britain are at strategic crossroads for domination over a bustling city ideally situated for trade. With its citizens constantly seeking shelter during those Japanese air raids, Calcutta embraces for yet another battle for control; but over its drug market. Surviving a fierce battle against the Green gang 5 years ago, the mysterious mobster Yang Guang returns to Calcutta with a menacing plan. Meanwhile, a worker in a chemical factory disappears and his concerned son seeks the help from a college associate with a knack for sleuthing. The stakes are profoundly high for author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's dhoti-clad detective who made it on Doordarshan and won hearts with his simple, subdued mannerisms and sharpness in wit. Dibakar Banerjee ('Khosla ka ghosla', 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!', 'Love Sex aur Dhokha') takes us back in time, all with detailed set pieces, costumes and the victorian elegance of Calcutta, to the origins of 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy' who will soon deduce that the case of the missing person is actually a convoluted sub-plot of a grand scheme that will affect global domination and drug control. While investigating the disappearance of Ajit Banerjee's father, Bhuvan Babu, Bakshy ends up at a boarding lodge where the intellectual Doctor Guha (Neeraj Kabi) provides assistance in finding his whereabouts. Upon finding vital contents in Bhuvan Babu's paan box, Byomkesh deduces that he is dead and along with Guha, ends up in a factory that is owned by local politician and chemical businessman Sikdar. The chain of events that are triggered by the discovery of a body in the factory are introduced gradually by the director who takes time to establish the plot and its characters. Throughout these proceedings, he showcases a concentrated effort in making it all look like a period thriller. From Sikdar, we learn about his political rival and rebellious nephew, Sukumar and his sister Satyawati. From them, the plot leads to Watanabe, a Japanese instructor and dentist who is involved in a covert Japanese operation that threatens to attack the city. Then there's the femme fatale in Angoori Devi, who has some darker connections in Calcutta's underworld. We also learn about the addictive element in Bhuvan Babu's paan masala that has the potential to deplete the profitable opium from the market. The opium scarcity and the covert operation have a link that our detective has to deduce and the journey of his investigation takes us on a thrilling ride that isn't necessarily fast-paced. However, the convoluted strands of the plot and some remarkable performances by the character actors against the backdrop of a smoky, bombarded yet charming Calcutta of the 1940s has a mesmerizing effect that engages you till the final moments. Dibakar Banerjee's directorial style is slick. Cinematographer Nikos Andritsakis and production designer Vanda Kataria reflect the period setting of Calcutta so remarkably that you can't take your eyes away from the details in every scene. There is of course no need for song and dance in such a thriller and so, the director chooses eclectic musicians who featured in events such as NH7 and the result is a modern rock/funk background score that isn't suited to the times but aptly suited to the theme of the noire/detective genre. Akin to the books and the TV show, the theme maintains its simplicity and of course, Arthur Conan Doyle inspired science of deduction. The big reveal isn't about solving all clues in order to apprehend a villain. It's more about putting all pieces together to understand each cog that was set in motion by the mastermind. The chase itself is our reward and not Byomkesh Bakshy's deduction. Sushant Singh Rajput is honestly, a surprising revelation. He had some promising roles in the past but none that could exploit his rawness. As an amateur investigator who relies mainly upon clues found on the crime scene and general observations, Bakshy didn't have the distraction of technology and therefore, Sushant's performance required spontaneity, a bit of quirkiness, sometimes arrogance and a lot of resolve for being in Byomkesh's bata shoes. Rajat Kapoor had the finesse and charm of Jeremy Brett who played Sherlock Holmes in the 1980s but Sushant introduces a modern day unpolished brilliance that was introduced by Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes. Even with mediocre financial success, this film is poised to return with Sushant promising yet another impressive show. Swastika Mukherjee as Angoori Devi is truly the femme fatale who knows much more than what she leaves an impression of on Bakshy. Anand Tiwari as Ajit, is a simpleton who gets caught in the affairs of the sleuth's pursuit of truth and most of the time, his expressions of disbelief will draw chuckles in the crowd. Neeraj Kabi's Dr. Guha plays a significant character who is difficult to trust but possesses the convincing powers. He is one solid actor to watch out for in the coming years. Dibakar Banerjee has put together some vital elements that make up a great thriller. A convoluted yet simple plot that is unraveled gradually through series of events that keep you engaged; the rich set design, costumes, look and feel of Calcutta in a period setting and some exemplary cinematography that captures the city's features as vividly as the countenances of the actors, keeps one's attention in the details. Banerjee has extracted some astounding performances from a lesser known cast of actors who portray their complex characters efficiently. A fresh approach to the background score, dialogues and action sequences leave a unique impression and turn a period novel into thrilling cinema that today's generation can thoroughly enjoy. The film's pace, plot and setting will certainly limit its exposure to the masses but detective stories were never meant to be a money spinning genre. They were meant to provoke cognitive thinking, maintain pace with the detective's deductions, consider the motive, the bigger picture and to always, pursue the truth. Doordarshan and Banerjee did just that. - 9.17 on a scale of 1-10.

Byomkesh Bakshy is one movie that surely takes you down the memory line, the nostalgic doordarshan…
Byomkesh Bakshy is one movie that surely takes you down the memory line, the nostalgic doordarshan days. seeing Rajit Kapoor portraying the role of Byomkesh Bakshy on our television screens as kids would be a real adventure filled with thrill and a desire to decode and decipher mysteries. Putting ourselves in the detective’s shoes and trying to find clues while watching this series would be a treat. Today after almost two decades Dibakar Banerjee has tried to recreate the same magic on big screen with natural actors like Sushant Singh Rajput,Anand Tiwari,Swastika Mukherjee,Divya Menon and Neeraj Kabi at the forefront with numerous other talented actors occupying the supporting positions and doing justice with their own endeavours. The plot of this crime thriller is based on a fictional character detective Byomkesh Bakshy who solves murder mysteries otherwise hard to rationalize, this character was created by Bengali writer Shradindu Bandopadhyay. To begin with we are in 2015 with loads of advancements and changes in various sectors be it infrastructural or socio economic in Kolkata, while Byomkesh Bakshy is set in a pre independence era in Calcutta,so hats off to the production designing team, art director, costume designers and make up artists of this movie for making the audience believe that they are witnessing an event set in 1940s.The casting director has also done an impeccable job by casting right people for right characters, though some of the faces like Divya Menon,Swastika Mukherjee and Neeraj Kabi are fairly new to the mass audience yet they have managed to startle the audience in a positive way with their splendid performances. Sushant Singh Rajput has ventured into something completely different this time, although it should be mentioned that till date he has always experimented with scripts ,he was a guy with immense capabilities but a victim of politics in kai po che, while in movies like shuddh desi romance he was a charmer and a dedicated lover in PK.This time he has left the viewers intrigued and engrossed with his persona as the character as he has been able to give this character his own identity and thus prompting people to use a cliché rechristening him as India’s Sherlock holmes.Anand Tiwari who played Ajit banerjee exceeds audience’s expectations emerging as a fine actor with amazing dialogue delivery and body language. The one actor who steals the limelight is Neeraj Kabi ,the villain,an actor whenever is playing a negatively inclined character succeeds in his attempts to convince the audience when there is a certain amount of hatred and dislike in reciprocation because of the ‘’evil’’ factor inside the character and his sinful acts, it has happened here as well with his supreme acting skills he has evolved as the dark horse and played his cards pretty cleverly.Swastika Mukherjee has dazzled the screen as a diva and a seductress.Meiyang chang however known to the mass audience previously, has a blink and miss kind of a role in the movie but even then he has pulled it with excellence, actor Shivam who plays Sukumar in the movie has a potential of earning himself a position in the hindi film industry as he has exhibited sheer talent even though he was offered a comparatively smaller role.Divya Menon comes across as a very wise actor who knows how to exude charisma on screen with simplicity .Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar Banerjee have been brilliant with the adaptation of the original story. The dialogue writing is top-notch and will definitely appeal the classes. To point out a few shortcomings of the movie it would be wise to list the music first, although the script of the movie does not demand much for the same still it would have been improved in different areas revolving around it like background scores and promotional videos, two of the promotional videos are already out one of them features Sushant Singh Rajput himself while the other features popular dance reality tv show contestant and newbie actor Lorraine Gottlieb. The lyrics and music lack spunk and has not been able to please the listener. The background music at times tends to be so loud that the dialogues spoken are almost inaudible thus making the ongoing scene difficult to comprehend. The bloodshed and violent scenes are a bit over the top and should have a bit more subtle and indirect as it might put off some section of the audience. The lighting, sound mixing and dubbing could have been much better. To sum it up this movie mystifies and entices and at the same time gives a sense of intricacy with its exquisite use of art and detailing into history. This movie surely is worth a watch and it will not disappoint any Dibakar Banerjee fans.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy - Dibakar Banerjee has done a thing which may or may not be good for this…
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy - Dibakar Banerjee has done a thing which may or may not be good for this movie . This is not a direct adaptation of Byomkesh Bakshy from Bengali literature . Characterisation of Byomkesh has been changed , he is not so sober and mature here . His intelligence level is not as you expect , neither he always does right things , he faulters in his way, infect he is not just solving the case rather he is part of the case , things are happening with him and his life is also in danger. This can be a little problem for the die hard fans but rest of the audience will not be hampered by it. Movie starts with Byomkesh completing his college and getting his first case randomly by chance. Its never clear why the man recommend the client(Anand Tiwary) to approach Byomkesh in the matter of his lost father. From there starts a detective plot which with each and every opening knot becomes more and more grander in its scale. Here a small problem arises. The movie should have been a story in which an event happens and the exact revealing of the suspense should have been at the climax. Instead of that we get a plot in which searching of the lost person was only the start and it keeps on connecting more and more subplots and the movie becomes so much grand and out of your sight that you were not ready for that. Whats makes the last third act of movie a little dragged one as you were not expecting something out of the sight climax. But the good thing is that the first two act of the movie are totally engaging. Cant say that the opening knots are great to crack your mind but are shocking enough to keep you engaging. And yes we got an intelligent villain who looks much more mature then our hero. As presented by Yash Raj Production i can tell you that film has not been in full control of our director. And all the differences that has been shown in comparison to the Book were should have been the decision of production house to make it more of a commercial Bollywood version. An extra point to add as a complaint is that although the production design and cinematography were brilliant to show the 40s era of Calcutta (only few production house are present in Bollywood who could have done this except YRF) our main lead doesn't use Hindi language in an Bengali accent . Which doesn't give the filling that we are watching a Bengali character solving a case in Calcutta('KAHAANI' had did this thing in a better manner). But then again its a typical Bengali kind of complaint which will not hamper other then Bengalis. Acting department with many unknown faces are perfectly casted also including some known actors. But for me Anand Tiwari as Ajit was the best of them and Sushant as Byomkesh come only after him. When the music was out i haven't liked it much but it fits the movie in such a good and contrast manner. Nevertheless i don't think that the usual audience will think this much on the movie as much as i have done. U can easily enjoy it . Its a good entry for Byomkesh . And yes the film has hinted for the sequel , so be ready for it too. 6.9/10. ANuP APu KuMaR

"Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" stars Sushant Singh Rajput and follows the titular detective in 1940s…
"Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" stars Sushant Singh Rajput and follows the titular detective in 1940s Calcutta as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of a famous chemist and the surrounding intrigue that follows when he finds out why people wanted him missing. The movie has a convoluted plot that strings the viewer along and keeps the suspense and intrigue well developed throughout. The anachronistic soundtrack and occasionally graphic violence contrast extremely with the sombre dramatics and occasional humor of Byomkesh and his partner as they try to figure out what is going on. Some parts of the film were over the top, but for the most part the film was a satisfying and believable movie experience. The directing is stylish and modern, bringing a lot of energy to the story that could have been dry and by-the-numbers if the period details were treated completely accurately. Some things I didn't like were nearer the end of the film when there is a scene explaining every single detail of the story to the audience - it dragged on too long and it wasn't necessary to remind us about everything we just saw. The ending was also a bit over the top and seemed like a way just to set up for the sequel instead of concluding this story - something which I hate in movies. All in all, I enjoyed the movie despite some flaws. The plot kept me interested in what was happening and the acting from everyone was solid. If you're interested in current Indian cinema but not a fan of musicals or love stories, this movie is worth seeing at least once.

Struggling to solve the case, breaking down each clue into a significant detail, in a world ravaged…
Struggling to solve the case, breaking down each clue into a significant detail, in a world ravaged by the British dominion and equally endangered by war, the 1940s, there lives a detective Byomkesh Bakshy typically stylized as Bakshy Babu. Sublime his way with words, sharp his mind and snazzy his attire, Sushant Singh Rajput dazzles as the Indian counterpart of the well known mastermind. Revitalizing the ingenuously crafted characters of Bandopadhyay, laughs gelled up here and there, Dibakar Bannerjee creates a thriller turning out in no more than 15 to 20 minutes to be a very intriguing flick as Bakshy Babu untangles the mystery by joining the pieces from the fragments of hints scattered across the locale. What's so different about the movie is that it takes the road less traveled by. It portrays a beautifully archaic Calcutta with vintage cars and trams, and a story paced with an excellent flow. With a strong grip on your curiosity and attention, it shines as the product of masterful thinking timed by fluid execution. From the creation of an eerie environment to the brilliant juicing up of characters, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a cinematic delight.

I usually disagree with your opinion and find myself agreeing with mihir fadnavis. This time its the other way round. The movie is slow paced, too contrived and tries to be too much. Editing is so bad that destroys the suspense factor that can make it exciting. Also make creative liberties are taken to suit the plot. Expected more from banner. this is my first <ahref="https://www.hollymoviereviewz.com">Hollywood Movie Review</a>
