A drought in 1770 British-ruled India compels Raja Mahinder Singh (Bharat Bhushan), along with his wife, Rani Kalyani (Ranjana), and young son, Suku (Baby Nirmal), to leave the palace and join thousands of others in search of food and water. Believing his wife and son to be dead, Mahinder is rescued by Satyanand (Prithviraj Kapoor), the leader of Anand Math, where he pledges to abstain from all materialistic pleasure and joins other heroic and valiant members which include Senapati Jivanand (Pradeep Kumar), who had sacrificed his love for Shantidev Sharma (Geeta Bali) and Bhavanand (Ajit) to drive the tyrannical and oppressive British out of India.
