Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja scores closing night spot at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles

The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) is gearing up for a thrilling closing night with the Tamil film Maharaja. Starring Vijay Sethupathi in his 50th film, Maharaja promises an action-packed ride laced with revenge and unexpected twists.

For Sethupathi, this marks a full-circle moment after his last visit to LA in 2018 for his film Seethakaathi. “That was my 25th film. Now I am going again to LA for my 50th film, at a festival,” Sethupathi told Variety in an interview. “Life is a beautiful script, my life has so many connections.”

 

Written and directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja marks a significant milestone in Sethupathi's career. The film delves into the powerful bond between Maharaja and his beloved daughter, Jothi. Their relationship serves as the emotional core of the story, raising questions about the lengths a father will go to protect his child. It stars Anurag Kashyap in the role of an antagonist.

 

“We do all the films with so much fear and passion. We just wanted to do what we had imagined,” Sethupathi told Variety as the film has emerged as one of the biggest Tamil movies of the year. “We didn’t expect this. Of course, I’m happy. But we just wanted my producer to collect the money, he should be safe. Because he has invested so much money just based on the paper [script] and the actors.”

 

 Maharaja will have its screening outside of India at IFFLA. This prestigious festival, now in its 22nd year, is a leading platform for showcasing Indian cinema to American audiences.
