Tovino Thomas-Basil Joseph’s Minnal Murali turned into graphic novel by Rana Daggubati and Tinkle Comics

Fans of the hit Malayalam superhero film Minnal Murali can rejoice! The character, played by Tovino Thomas, is getting a new lease of life in the world of graphic novels. Announced at the Mumbai Comic-Con 2024, a collaboration between Rana Daggubati's Spirit Media and Tinkle Comics will bring Minnal Murali to the pages of a graphic novel.

Minnal Murali, released in 2021, tells the story of an ordinary tailor in Kerala, India, who gains superpowers after being struck by lightning (with "minnal" meaning lightning in Malayalam). This tailor, played by Tovino Thomas in the film, isn't the only one touched by the electrical surge. A social outcast is also struck, and their newfound abilities take them on divergent paths – one towards heroism, the other towards villainy.

 

The film, directed by Basil Joseph and produced by Sophia Paul's Weekend Blockbusters, was a major success, finding a home on Netflix and becoming one of the platform's most popular offerings. The graphic novel promises to be more than just a retelling of the film's story. Readers can expect a deeper dive into Minnal Murali's origins alongside a brand new adventure that expands the superhero's world.

This isn't the first foray into comics for Spirit Media. At the San Diego Comic-Con 2023, they unveiled various projects encompassing film, television, and of course, comics. This collaboration with Tinkle Comics marks a significant moment for Tinkle, known for being the publishing arm of India's longest-running comic book brand, Amar Chitra Katha. Tinkle has established a strong reputation for its homegrown characters like Suppandi and Shikari Shambu, but Minnal Murali represents their first venture into the graphic novel format.
