Prithviraj Sukumaran receives Kerala State Award for Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life

At the 54th Kerala State Film Awards presentation ceremony held in Thiruvananthapuram on April 16, Prithviraj Sukumaran was awarded the Best Actor title for his performance in Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life. The award was presented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a ceremony that celebrated Malayalam cinema’s achievements across the year 2023.

Aadujeevitham, directed by Blessy and based on the novel by Benyamin, tells the harrowing tale of Najeeb, a migrant labourer forced into slavery in the deserts of the Middle East. The film demanded a significant physical and emotional transformation from Prithviraj, who underwent intense preparation, including dramatic weight loss and months of filming in extreme desert conditions. His portrayal of Najeeb - marked by restraint, vulnerability, and endurance - was widely praised and resonated with audiences both in India and internationally.

 

The film’s long-anticipated release and critical reception played a key role in spotlighting Prithviraj’s dedication to the craft. The Kerala State Film Awards, which were announced in August 2024 but presented in April 2025, acknowledged his performance as one of the most compelling of the year. The timing also aligns with a high point in Prithviraj’s career, coming soon after his directorial venture L2: Empuraan, which has emerged as one of Malayalam cinema’s biggest commercial successes.

 

This is not Prithviraj’s first recognition at the state level. In 2006, he became the youngest actor to win the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Vaasthavam, breaking the record previously held by Mohanlal. The award now returns to him nearly two decades later, reinforcing his consistent presence in Malayalam cinema's evolving landscape.

 

There is also a deeper legacy at play. Prithviraj’s father, Sukumaran, was the first in the family to be honoured with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. With this latest accolade, Prithviraj continues a generational journey through the annals of Malayalam cinema.
