Park Chan Wook directorial Decision To Leave gets two nominations at 2023 BAFTA Film Awards
South Korea’s acclaimed investigative romance drama film Decision to Leave, directed by Park Chan Wook, has earned two nominations at 2023 BAFTA Film Awards. The film has been nominated for Best Director and Best Film Not in the English Language. This marks Park Chan Wook’s second film to receive a BAFTA nomination, following his win in 2018 for Best Film Not in the English Language with The Handmaiden.
In the best director category, the film has been nominated alongside All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Tar, and The Woman King. Meanwhile under Best Film Not in the English Language, the film is up against are All Quiet on the Western Front, Argentina, 1985, Corsage, and The Quiet Girl.
“Decision to Leave follows police detective Hae Jun, portrayed by actor Park Hae Il, who begins to fall for a suspect: a Chinese widow named Seo Rae, portrayed by Tang Wei. The pair meet after Hae Jun begins to investigate a mysterious death of a man — Seo Rae’s husband — who was found dead after falling from a mountain.”
The crime drama, which first debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, premiered in South Korea in June, and then in US and UK cinemas on October 14. The film also earned director Park Chan Wook the best director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film was also announced as part of the shortlist for International Feature Film at the 2023 Oscars. The final nomination lists will be officially announced on January 24.
The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards will be held on February 19.
