Nicole Kidman on balancing acting and producing in Holland; reveals, "It's so difficult to get films made now"

In Holland, Nicole Kidman not only stars as the lead character, Nancy Vandergroot, but also serves as a producer. This dual role brings a unique dynamic to her approach, but as she explains, she remains fully committed to her role as an actor once production begins.

At a recent press conference, Kidman described how she navigates the balance between acting and producing, ensuring that the film remains a collaborative effort. "Once I pass it over, I try to delegate to the people around me so that I'm very much the actor in this situation. Because I think, and I can speak to this with Mimi, because it's important that the director is the leader. And I'm there as her actor and she's shaping me and forming me in that regard. And if there's a crisis, absolutely. I mean, we had some situations where there was some crises. [Laugh] As there always is on every production. And then you need to kind of pull your resources and then I have to step in at different times."

 

Kidman also emphasized her passion for helping get projects off the ground, particularly in an industry where securing financing can be challenging. "But primarily, a lot of it is being able to get it made, being able to advocate for the, you know? It's so difficult to get films made now. And so, to be able to just say to Mimi, we can finance and get your film made, you know, that's a really big support and offering, and that's what I love to be able to do. And then I step in as the actor and go, okay, shape me, form me, give me ideas. Let's go. Let's play. Because primarily we're playing. [Laugh] And it should be fun. There's got to be an element of fun."

 

 

Kidman’s ability to shift between roles while maintaining a strong working relationship with director Mimi Cave speaks to her experience and dedication to filmmaking. Her leadership behind the scenes ensured that Holland came to fruition, while her performance in front of the camera brings the story to life.

 

The film, a genre-blending thriller set in Holland, Michigan, had its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Festival on March 9 and is set for release on Amazon Prime Video on March 27, 2025. As both a producer and actor, Kidman’s contributions to Holland extend beyond her on-screen presence.
