Top gen-next superstar this decade: Tough competition between Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Ranveer Singh and Tiger Shroff!

By Himesh Mankad -

Recently, an article was published wherein we analysed the way the films starring older lot of actor i.e. the one’s from the 90’s fared at the Box-Office in India this decade. The results were quite clear wherein Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar had a huge lead over the other actors, with Khan being the top star in terms of Nett Box-Office collections. In this article, we would see how well have the younger lot of actors i.e. Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Tiger Shroff, Arjun Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra have done this decade.

Top gen-next superstar this decade: Tough competition between Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Ranveer Singh and Tiger Shroff!

Talking about the sheer impact among the audience, it is Varun Dhawan who is the most popular new-comer as his films have consistently done well at the Box-Office. Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are also quite there, but the consistency factor keeps Dhawan above the rest although the numbers have a different story to say. Here’s a look at the top stars from the younger generation:

Tiger Shroff (5 Films – Rs 365.14 crore)

5 Film old Tiger Shroff has cemented his position as the action hero of Bollywood having delivered 3 successful films in the genre namely Heropanti, Baaghi and Baaghi 2. With the phenomenal run of Baaghi 2 at the Box-Office, the trade has already called him the upcoming star of masses as this was one film that he carried totally on his shoulders. Tiger has carved a niche for himself among the masses and as things stand today, a well mounted action film with Tiger Shroff in lead is bound to open well, especially at the mass centres. The 5 film aggregate collections stand at Rs 365.14 crore with average collection per film falling in the range of Rs 73.028 crore. This is a good result, and given his slate for release from hereon, Tiger is undoubtedly targeting the spot of being the most successful young star this decade.

Sidharth Malhotra (9 Films – Rs 469 crore)

Sidharth Malhotra has been the weakest this decade as far as the theatrical run is concerned. The actor showed a spark with his initial few films i.e. Student of The Year, Hasee Toh Phasee and Ek Villain, however the run post that is disappointing to say the least. The last four films starring Malhotra barely managed to cross the Rs 30 crore mark at the Box-Office in India, and this is a worrying sign indeed. The actor had 9 releases this decade which have raked in approximately Rs 469.00 crore in India with an average collection per film of Rs 52.11 crore. Two Hero Films like Brothers, Ek Villain and Kapoor And Sons have been the major contributors towards the aggregate collections of Sidharth. His slate from here on looks impressive and the trade is hopeful that the actor makes a comeback in the industry

Arjun Kapoor (9 Films - Rs 492.18 crore)

Arjun Kapoor had a mixed bag this decade, although his position is better than Sidharth. His films have consistently raked in over Rs 50 crore at the domestic Box-Office, however there is a vacuum for the big grossers in his filmography. The biggest hit till date for Arjun is 2 States, which raked in more than Rs 100 crore in India, and since then he has not been able to find a place in the coveted club. The 9 film aggregate total for Arjun is Rs 492.18 crore with average collection per film falling in the range of Rs 54.68 crore. In an ideal scenario, the average collection per film for the younger lot of actors needs to be in excess of Rs 60.00 crore, as that would set the base to take their stardom to the next level in the coming decade. Arjun has been quite good with the choice of scripts, and his upcoming films also look in the commercial zone which would boost the aggregate collections for him.

Varun Dhawan (10 Films - Rs 866.29 crore)

Although Dhawan finds a third spot in this list, in reality he is among the most bankable stars in today’s time. Varun Dhawan films have consistently done well at the Box-Office; in-fact the actor has not delivered an outright flop since the release of his debut film, Student of The Year. Jr. Dhawan has been regularly delivering the hit films, although there is a need for him to deliver one huge blockbuster for being crowned as the number one star from his generation at present. An interesting point to note here is the fact that all the successful films starring Varun have been riding on his shoulders, and there has been absolutely no debate for credit. The 10-film aggregate collection of Varun Dhawan stands at Rs 866.29 crore, with average collection per film failing in the range of Rs 86.62 crore. With Sui Dhaaga and Kalank up for release next, the average collection per film for Varun Dhawan is expected to touch the Rs 100 crore mark. Unlike Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, whose total collections have spiked up because of the phenomenal run of one or two humongous blockbusters, every single film has contributed towards Varun’s total.

Ranveer Singh (10 Films - Rs 930.59 crore)

Ranveer Singh is among the most talented actors of our generation as he proved his versatility by taking up diverse characters in films like Band Baaja Baaraat, Ram Leela, Dil Dhadakne Do, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. The big successes for Ranveer have come with the combination of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone; however, outside that he is yet to really prove his worth, but none the less the numbers have come and helped Ranveer become a popular entity for audience across the country. The fight for credit in terms of collections will always be there, we believe his next two films i.e. Simmba and Gully Boy will show the real reach of Ranveer among the audience. While he has set the base for himself to explode with the help of Bhansali, it is about time he takes the stardom to the next level with Simmba and ’83. The 10-film aggregate collection for Ranveer Singh stands at Rs 930.59 crore with an average collection per film falling in the range of Rs 93.05 crore. Padmaavat has been the major contributor to this figure as the film raked in over Rs 300 crore at the Box-Office.

Ranbir Kapoor (12 Films – Rs 1205.62 crore)

Ranbir Kapoor is the only actor from this list, whose average collection per film is in excess of Rs 100 crore, and major credit for this goes to two films i.e. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Sanju. While there are no doubts on Ranbir Kapoor the actor, a lot of people in the trade raised question about the stardom of Ranbir Kapoor after back to back disappointing films in the last few years. Just like Ranveer, even Ranbir hasn’t been consistent with the hit films; however the two blockbusters delivered by him this decade put him in a dominating spot this decade. The credit game also comes into picture as Sanju was a Rajkumar Hirani film, who has managed to create his own brand among the multiplex audience, so crediting Ranbir Kapoor in entirety for the success of Sanju would be a little harsh on Hirani. The huge success of the two films proves that Ranbir is one star who has the potential to challenge the biggest stars of the industry if backed by the right content. Also, there are no second thoughts on the fact that Ranbir Kapoor is sure to be the next superstar of the industry, and Sanju was just the beginning of a new era for the star. The 12-film aggregate collection stands at Rs 1205.62 crore with average collection per film falling in the range of Rs 100.46 crore.

The trio of Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan are expected to rule the Box-Office in the coming few years and the theatrical business of their films this decade just validates that they would live onto the humongous expectations that the trade and audience has from them. Tiger Shroff is the dark horse and we can pass a comment on him only after seeing the performance of a couple of more films. Arjun Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra on the other hand too can make it big however they would always need the additional padding in the form of scripts, scale, music and star-cast.
