The music world is reeling from the loss of globally celebrated tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, who passed away at 73 in San Francisco on Monday. Known for his exceptional contributions to Indian classical music and his role as a cultural ambassador, Hussain’s demise has left a void that many believe can never be filled. The maestro succumbed to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung disease, as confirmed by his family in an official statement.

Survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola, daughters Anisa and Isabella Qureshi, and siblings Taufiq, Fazal Qureshi, and Khurshid Aulia, Hussain’s legacy lives on in his contributions to Indian classical music and his ability to bring global audiences closer to Indian traditions.
