Shatrughan Sinha on 21 years of Aan: Men At Work, "I was reluctant to take on the role"

In the mid-2000s, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar had acquired an identity for making realistic and hard-hitting films like Chandni Bar, Page 3, etc. So, when he came up with the commercial caper Aan: Men At Work, it took the industry and the audience by surprise. Apart from the film’s genre, it also had popular stars like Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, along with Shatrughan Sinha, Jackie Shroff, Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, among others.

As the film completes 21 years today, Shatrughan Sinha got talking about it.

 

Shatrughan recalled Aan with pleasure. “My only film with the talented Mr Madhur Bhandarkar,” he said. “If I am not mistaken, my role was written for Shri Amitabh Bachchan. For reasons best known to him, he couldn’t do the part. I was reluctant to take on the role. But Madhur convinced me. Once I was on …or Aan…. it was a whole lot of fun.”

 

He added, “The action scenes were excellent and the whole cast worked as a team. This was the only film where I co-starred with the much-missed super talented Irrfan Khan. So yes, memorable. I am not sure how well it did commercially. But it was very different from what the director normally makes.”
