The Romantics: Aditya Chopra BREAKS silence on nepotism debate and Uday Chopra’s career: “Imagine a company like YRF, which has probably launched the most newcomers, and we could not make him a star”

The word ‘nepotism’ has become known all over after Kangana Ranaut uttered it 6 years ago on the TV show ‘Koffee With Karan’. An accusation has been made by several people ever since that the Bollywood film industry likes to mainly work with star kids, and that these actors, who come from film families, don’t have to struggle much. Aditya Chopra, in his rare interview on the Netflix show The Romantics, has spoken about this aspect.

The Romantics: Aditya Chopra BREAKS silence on nepotism debate and Uday Chopra’s career: “Imagine a company like YRF, which has probably launched the most newcomers, and we could not make him a star”

Aditya Chopra said, “So yeah, this nepotism debate, which has really flared up in the last year or so, is unfortunate. About 25 or 30 years back, the industry was definitely smaller. Hence, it was very natural for a child to aspire to do the same business as the parent. This was true in most Indian businesses. I think one of the things that people tend to ignore is that every person who comes from a privileged background, be it a family lineage or friends, or be it what they sort of call the ‘insiders’ of the film industry, everyone is not successful.”

Aditya Chopra then gave the example of his brother Uday Chopra to prove his point, “My brother is an actor and he is not a very successful actor. Now here is the son of one of the biggest filmmakers. He’s the brother of a very big filmmaker. Imagine a company like YRF, which has probably launched the most newcomers, and we could not make him a star! Why could we not do it for our own? Because the bottom line is, only an audience will decide, ‘I like this person and I want to see this person’. No one else can decide that.”

At a later point in The Romantics, Aditya Chopra analyzed why Uday’s acting career didn’t work, “Uday is a very talented actor. He’s very hard working. But for whatever reason, the audience did not want to see him the way he wanted to see himself. They loved him in comedy; he didn’t want to do comedy.”
