Robert Pattinson reveals his worst day of The Batman filming when Matt Reeves asked for over 40 takes

Expressing and delivering realistic emotions in costume has been one of the greatest challenges faced by actors when shooting for a superhero film. With Robert Pattinson being the third actor to rendition as Batman in the past decade, the pressure on him to deliver something original while remaining true to the beloved character -- is pretty huge.

While most of the superhero films choose to add CGI and VFX to characters' faces for emotive scenes when they're in the suit, Matt Reeves’ vision to keep the cowl for his iteration of Bruce Wayne proved to be quite a task for the actor who was on the verge of having “an embolism.”

During a Q&A event attended by Screen Rant, Reeves and Pattinson discussed the challenges of lengthy monologues and acting beneath Batman’s cowl. The director jokingly called the idea to make emotions visible through the cowl “a terrible mistake” because they “had no idea how hard it was going to be.”

“One of the things I love to do when I'm working with actors is say, 'Well come take a look,'” said director Matt Reeves. “And [Rob would] be like, 'How can that not be enough? I'm overacting. It's ridiculous.' And I'd say, 'Come take a look, Rob.' He'd go, 'Oh, you can't see my eyes.'”

“That was maybe the worst day of the whole shoot, because I really, genuinely thought it was you that was wrong,” Pattinson remarked. “And then I was like, 'How can we be doing 40 takes?' And then you're like, 'Just come and look at it.' And I was looking at it and I go, 'Wow, I just look like — there's nothing.'”

Since Matt Reeves’ The Batman is going for a more realistic look, the emotion had to come from the actor himself. At times, Reeves would ask Pattinson for “more,” not realizing the actor already pushed himself to the limit and nearly had a self-described embolism, leading to a specific moment on set when Pattinson became frustrated with how theatrical he had to become to emote.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022. The film also features Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as GCPD's James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Colin Farrell as Oswald "Penguin" Cobblepot.
