Koffee With Karan 8: Rohit Shetty opens up on Cirkus failure; says, “Somewhere as a director, I went wrong”

Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh rekindled their cop universe association with the comedy entertainer Cirkus in 2022 and the film had much anticipation. Alas! It failed to meet the audience’s expectations as they were left neither amused nor entertained. Although the filmmaker has opened up much about the response he received for the movie, Rohit decided to speak candidly on the film’s failure in the recent episode of Koffee With Karan 8 wherein he appeared with Ajay Devgn.

Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn, who decided to give audiences a glimpse of their off-screen camaraderie that can be traced back to three decades, were seen having a hearty conversation with the show host Karan Johar when the Dharma head honcho quizzed Shetty about the response Cirkus received. Talking about the same, the Dilwale filmmaker said, “When Cirkus failed Anupam Kher sir had come to my office and he had said something. He said, ‘After point of time in your life, when you have worked for so long, it is the event which fails, not you’.” He further added that the film was shot before the pandemic and released right after that, but also asserted that he wouldn’t ever use it as an excuse. “I am not saying it didn’t do well because of that. Somewhere as a director, I went wrong and that’s where the film didn’t do well. Good it was a small film I went wrong with and not a big one,” he added.

 

In the same interaction, Rohit Shetty also revealed that he coped up with it quite fast and that three days after this, he had started shooting for his debut web series Indian Police Force. “Once you know you haven’t done well, you can’t be an escapist. You have to sit and analyze that we should not do this again because people don’t want this from us. Do your thing.”

 

This episode of Koffee With Karan featuring Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on December 21. On the other hand, speaking of Cirkus, the film was inspired by the Shakespearean novel Comedy Of Errors, and featured Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Pooja Hegde, and Varun Sharma in lead roles.
