Viveck Vaswani has been entertaining us for years with his performances in movies. He also turned producer and delivered some memorable films, one of them being Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992). The Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla starrer recently completed 31 years. While speaking about this film exclusively with Bollywood Hungama, Viveck Vaswani opened up about his recent health scare for the first time.

EXCLUSIVE: Viveck Vaswani opens up that he suffered from throat cancer; BLASTS multiplexes for inflated ticket rates: “With a ticket priced at Rs. 3, common man made Amitabh Bachchan a superstar. Our films catered to them. Today, we are only catering to 3% of population”

Viveck Vaswani revealed, “I had throat cancer. I didn’t tell anyone until I got cured. It was a very big nuisance to my work as I am a teacher as well as an actor. And if you treat cancer as a nuisance, it’ll go away. If you treat it as a sickness, it’ll kill you. I was working every day of my battle against cancer.”

He further stated, “The surgery was on a Friday. Saturday, I was home. On Monday, the doctors confirmed that it was cancerous. On Wednesday, I started radiation. 41 days later, I was cured. In all those 41 days, I worked and went to the campus. I didn’t go to bed a single day (due to radiation effects).”

Not many knew about Viveck Vaswani’s condition, but his family stood rock-solid with him during the tough time, “Both my brothers were very worried for me. But they gave a lot of support.”

When asked if he was fine now, he replied, “Oh, yes. I don’t fall sick. I make people fall sick!”

Sense of humour has always been his forte and so has been his comments on social media about inflated ticket rates, which always strike a chord with the common man. On this, Viveck Vaswani thundered, “I don’t understand how taxi drivers, coolies and labourers are going to afford to see a film? They constitute 97% of the population. With a ticket priced Rs. 3, they made Amitabh Bachchan a superstar. Our films also catered to them. Today, we are only catering to 3% of the population. Even if the ticket is priced at Rs. 500, we are losing money.”

What has angered moviegoers is that they have to spend a bomb on not just tickets but also on food and beverages. Viveck exulted, “The model is all about the stock market and not the audience. We don’t make films for the general audience. We make films for our multiplex customers who in turn buy popcorn and make money for the multiplexes. And then the stakeholders make money.”
