There was a time when cinema meant a medium of entertainment for all kinds of audiences. This is because the rates used to be affordable. However, after the advent of multiplexes, the scenario changed. The ticket rates soared high and during festivals or event films, the prices went further up. After the pandemic, it was expected that the prices would drop as the incomes of several in the film industry was affected.

The prices have risen compared to the pre-pandemic times. While the strategy worked for certain highly awaited films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, KGF - Chapter 2, RRR etc; it backfired for several films where the demand was just not there. Many among the moviegoers and trade began demanding for the tickets to be made cheaper and that it’ll help in increasing footfalls and thereby, the collections of films.

A massive change in this pattern was seen with Kartik Aaryan’s blockbuster horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, whose tickets were priced reasonably. The same idea was adopted for Akshay Kumar’s period saga Samrat Prithviraj as well. The makers of Nushrratt Bharuccha’s comedy Janhit Mein Jaari introduced an offer wherein tickets would be available for just Rs. 100 in most multiplexes in India on day 1.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Mukesh Bhatt on his 69th birthday, a few days back. During our conversation, when we asked him if he believes that cheaper ticket prices would increase footfalls and bring in more money, he made it clear that he doesn’t adhere to this notion. Mukesh Bhatt said, “Agar aapko picture nahi dekhni hai theatre mein, toh mat dekho na yaar. What’s the problem? Nobody is forcing you to buy a ticket. Don’t watch it. Wait for 3-4 weeks for the film to come on OTT. But if you are eager to see a film, then get ready to pay.”
