EXCLUSIVE: Apollena actor Sandeep Baswana reveals the reason behind his absence from OTT; says “I've been offered a couple of roles but I'll do if something cleaner is offered”

Sandeep Baswana, who has taken on the role of Apollena’s father Giridhar on the Colors show, is excited about doing something that Indian television has possibly rarely explored in the past. Revolving around a girl’s dream of becoming astronaut, Apollena focuses on the beloved ‘Daddy’s li’l girl’ bond where a daughter takes on a mission of proving her father innocent by achieving his dream of becoming an astronaut when he is labelled as a traitor in a conspiracy. From sharing screen space with Aditi Sharma to opening up about the evolution of television, Sandeep Baswana touches upon many topics in this exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama.

The popular actor discussed the main reason behind him saying ‘yes’ to Apollena and how the script motivated him to come on board. “The story, the team and the narration of my character and the plot line of the show revolves around astronauts in space,” he shared with much excitement to Bollywood Hungama. While he is glad about doing such an unusual show, he is also all praises for his co-star and onscreen daughter Aditi Sharma. “She's a very fun-loving, enthusiastic youngster, who is very eager to learn. And so she, in whatever way I can guide her, I do that. And whatever new things I can learn from her, I do that too. She's a very nice, genuine, egoless person, and I'm really excited to share screen with her,” he added.

 

It has been a long journey for Baswana, who started his journey with family dramas like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka. Speaking about the changing phases of television, the actor elaborated, “From Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi till today, yeah, television has (evolved). It was about huge families then, now the families have become smaller. Earlier there used to be a huge family drama that I've been a part of, and everybody had a very special part to play in it. But that was the story about the ensemble cast, a story of a family. Now it has become more about a boy and a girl, in this case (Apollena) it is about a father and a daughter”.

 

Further he cited how audiences are eager for more drama on television. “The shows used to be Monday to Thursday, now they become Monday to Sunday. The appetite for drama in public has gone even more and they expect more drama. So, writers have to keep on working on creating more drama for public. Otherwise, they're still the same, you know, families sitting together watching TV.”

 

Having been a part of television journey for so long, the actor is often questioned by fans about his absence on OTT. Addressing the same, Sandeep asserted that he is open to do OTT as far as he is offered the kind of content that every member of his family can watch. “Until now, I've been offered a couple of roles where they've asked me to do some very intimate scenes. The audition script was also like full of, colourful language, swear words. I was not very comfortable doing that. I'm not very comfortable with that kind of a language and that kind of, intimate scenes they show. Not yet. Maybe (I’ll do) something cleaner if I'm offered. I would like to,” he asserted.

 

“I come from a family like, where I want my parents to watch every show that I'm a part of. I can't tell them, don't watch this show, it's not, you know, good. So, they'll ask, why did you do it? I don't want to be a part of a show that uses foul language, something that my parents cannot watch,” he insisted.
