When Divya Dutta gave an ultimatum to God that she would quit films; said, “He had one day to change the course of my career”

Over the years, Divya Dutta has carved a place for herself in the tinsel town by being a part of a number of acclaimed films where she gave fine performances. But there was a time when she was struggling in the industry and wasn’t getting meaty roles to play. In fact, one day she got so disheartened that she gave an ultimatum to God. The actress has herself revealed this incident in journalist-turned-author Roshmila Bhattacharya’s book ‘Spooked: Bollywood’s Encounters With The Paranormal’ by Om Books.

When Divya Dutta gave an ultimatum to God that she would quit films; said, “He had one day to change the course of my career”

This incident goes back to 1994 when Divya was new in the industry. At that time, she was just launched with six others in the film Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna (1994). She was getting roles in multi-starrers back then, but she was not finding anything substantial to display her acting chops.

A year after living alone in Mumbai, Divya’s determination was slowly fading away. Unfortunately, she couldn’t confide in her mom Dr Nalini as she would have immediately called her back home in Ludhiana. This is when she turned towards God and gave Him an ultimatum.

Divya said in the book, “With no one else to talk to, I started venting to the huge picture of Shirdi’s Sai Baba in my room. I spoke to Baba as if he were my parent, telling him between sobs that I couldn’t go on this way. I felt defeated. Then, rooth ke (sulkily) I gave him an ultimatum. He had one day to change the course of my career, failing which I would return home for good.”

Divya wasn’t expecting any miracle, but the next day, she got a call from writer-filmmaker Sanjay Chhel saying that Pamela Rooks is making a film on Khushwant Singh’s novel ‘Train To Pakistan’ in which she had a role for Divya.

On the same day, Divya went to meet Pamela. The meet had some surprise in store for her. “The same evening, I went to meet Pamela with several of my glamorous pictures, because that’s what everyone wanted to see back then. She took one look at the pictures and told me quite frankly that she didn’t like them. My heart sank, and I launched into an internal monologue about booking a ticket for home, when she surprised me by saying she liked the way I looked in person and my childlike innocence and wanted to cast me as the Muslim prostitute Haseena, one of the leads. Before the day had ended, I had landed the role and a film of my dreams.”

Divya Dutta was lauded for her performance in Train To Pakistan, which paved way for more roles coming her way. That one day, when she gave an ultimatum to God, did change her life.

The book ‘Spooked: Bollywood’s Encounters With The Paranormal’ has a total of 36 true paranormal or supernatural incidents narrated by a number of Bollywood celebrities, including Juhi Chawla, Rajkummar Rao, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Esha Deol, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Abhishek Kapoor, Suparn Varma, etc.
