Anurag Kashyap SLAMS CBFC smoking warnings in Sinners, says it ruins the immersive experience

By Bollywood Hungama News Network -

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has once again locked horns with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), this time over the mandatory health disclaimers imposed during screenings of the global horror hit Sinners in Indian theatres. Kashyap argued that these warnings disrupt the film’s carefully crafted atmosphere, pulling audiences out of the narrative.

Anurag Kashyap SLAMS CBFC smoking warnings in Sinners, says it ruins the immersive experience

In an interview with IndieWire, he stated, “In a mood piece such as Sinners, these disclaimers on smoking and drinking yank the audience out of the immersive experience that the filmmaker had painstakingly created, killing the mood and build-up in the process.” His sentiments have found resonance on platforms like X, where viewers have called the warnings “arbitrary” and “disruptive.”

The Impact on Sinners’ Cinematic Experience

Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, has captivated global audiences, grossing $175 million worldwide and ranking as the sixth highest-grossing film of 2025. The horror film, lauded for its exploration of racism, segregation, and religion, follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack confronting an ancient evil in their Mississippi hometown. Endorsed by Tom Cruise for its stunning IMAX experience, the film’s immersive quality is compromised in India by the CBFC’s oversized anti-smoking and anti-alcohol warnings.

Anurag Kashyap’s History of Conflict with CBFC

This is not Kashyap’s first battle with the CBFC over smoking disclaimers. In 2013, he challenged the board’s mandate to include similar warnings in his film Ugly. Taking the issue to the Bombay High Court, Kashyap argued that the disclaimers infringed on his creative freedom. Despite his efforts, Ugly was released with the mandated warnings after a prolonged legal battle and piracy issues.
