The critically-acclaimed Obsession is all set to release this week in India and there’s some sort of demand to see it, as evident by the decent advance sales. The producers, Universal Pictures, completed the censor process way in advance, and in this article, Bollywood Hungama will focus on the cuts given to the film.
Obsession has been passed with an ‘A’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). However, the studio had to make three modifications for CBFC’s approval. A scene of extreme violence was reduced by 24 seconds in the second half. From the duration provided in the list, it seems like the scene will now last for six seconds. A 14-second-long scene of graphic sexual activity was asked to be deleted. Finally, a nudity visual was asked to be replaced, presumably with approved shots.
In short, 38 seconds of adult content have been snipped from Obsession. Once these changes were made, the CBFC handed over the censor certificate on May 4. The length of the film, as mentioned on the certificate, is 110.29 minutes. In other words, Obsession is 1 hour, 50 minutes and 29 seconds long.
Obsession will have paid previews in India from 6:00 pm onwards on Thursday, May 28, followed by a full-fledged release on Friday, May 29. Starring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, it is written and directed by Curry Barker. It tells the story of a man who buys a supernatural toy that grants his wish for his childhood friend to fall in love with him, but it leads to horrifying consequences.
Obsession was released in most parts of the world on May 15 and has emerged as a surprise super-hit. To date, it has collected $90 million worldwide, with $68 million coming from North America. It earned more in its second weekend than the first, shocking trade pundits in the West. The Hollywood Reporter quoted Comscore chief box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, who said, “A second weekend jump nearing 40 per cent is virtually unprecedented in the annals of modern box office tracking, and there really is no direct apples-to-apples comparison available.”
