Actor R. Madhavan has opened up about a pivotal period in his career when he stepped away from acting for four years, explaining that a seemingly ordinary encounter prompted him to reconsider the direction of his work. The revelation comes in a recent interview with Unfiltered Entertainment, in which he reflected on his artistic journey and personal growth.

Madhavan recalled his break began after an experience while shooting a Tamil song in Switzerland. “I was in the middle of the road and I saw this Swiss farmer, sitting there, looking at us with complete disdain,” he recalled. “I looked at him and thought you come to Chennai and I’ll show you who I am.”
At the time, Madhavan said he was feeling increasingly disconnected from the roles he was being offered. Reflecting on that period, he said, “Before Saala Khadoos, I had to take a break because I was very disillusioned with the kind of work I was doing.” He added that he realised much of his earlier career was focused on stereotypical, audience-pleasing roles rather than projects that reflected his own range and capabilities.
During his hiatus, which began in 2011 and lasted until 2016, he embarked on a journey of self-exploration. The 55-year-old actor said he used the time to understand life beyond cinema, stepping away from films and even ad assignments. “I even stopped doing ad films, grew a beard, travelled a lot around Chennai, and other places in India,” he said. He spoke with everyday people, including rickshaw drivers, to understand their perspectives on life and what truly matters to them.
Madhavan credited his wife, Sarita Burje, for helping him recognise his feelings about work. Recalling a conversation with her, he said, “She said that you are going for work like you want to come back from it. That actually made a lot of sense.”
The introspective period proved transformative. “That insight for four years is probably what I’m eating off right now,” Madhavan said, indicating that the clarity he gained has influenced his choice of roles since his return. His post-hiatus work, beginning with Saala Khadoos, marked a shift to films that allowed him to explore different character depths, moving away from the romantic hero roles that dominated his earlier phase.
Madhavan also observed that after his break, he became more selective about his collaborations, seeking out directors and stories that matched his evolving artistic sensibilities. “When I came back, I realised that my filmmakers… their ability to tell a story was still to impress their mentors. I started looking for new directors,” he said.
