Vijay Sethupathi on turning down role opposite Krithi Shetty: “I declined the offer…”

Vijay Sethupathi refuses to act opposite Krithi Shetty in DSP citing their previous father-daughter roles and her age as key reasons.

Actor Vijay Sethupathi, known for his versatile performances, recently opened up about turning down a role opposite actor Krithi Shetty. In an interview with BehindWoods while promoting his upcoming film Maharaja, Sethupathi detailed his reasons for refusing to play a romantic lead with Shetty in Ponram’s 2022 film DSP.

Vijay Sethupathi and Krithi Shetty previously shared the screen in Buchi Babu Sana's 2021 Telugu film Uppena, where Sethupathi portrayed Shetty's father. This role had a significant impact on his decision. He explained, “I declined the offer of being paired opposite Krithi in DSP. I played her father in Uppena, which the makers didn’t know about. There’s a scene in Uppena that Krithi was nervous about when we were shooting. I even asked her to think of me as her real father while we were shooting that. She is a little older than my son. I told them I couldn’t do it.”

The actor's refusal to take on the role demonstrates his respect for the boundaries established by their previous on-screen relationship. He felt it would be inappropriate to transition from a father-daughter dynamic to a romantic pairing. This is not the first time Vijay has spoken about turning down an offer to be paired opposite Krithi. In 2023, he mentioned, “I played the role of Bebamma’s father in the Telugu movie Uppena. After Uppena's stupendous success, I signed a film in Tamil. The film unit thought that Krithi Shetty would be good as the heroine in the film. When I received her photo, I immediately called the unit and told them I essayed her father in a recently released Telugu film. I can’t romantically approach her. So, please avoid her as a heroine.”

Anukreethy Vas was later cast to play his character, Vascodagama’s love interest and later wife, Annapoorani, in DSP. Despite the film receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics, Sethupathi's decision was guided by his principles and respect for the actors he works with.

Upcoming work for Vijay Sethupathi includes Nithilan Swaminathan’s Maharaja, which will hit theatres on June 14, and it will also feature Anurag Kashyap in a pivotal role. He is also set to appear in Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai 2 and a silent film titled Gandhi Talks. Meanwhile, Krithi Shetty will be seen in Sriram Adittya’s Telugu film Manamey, alongside Sharwanand, which is slated for release on June 7.
