On Vijay Sethupathi’s birthday on January 16, the title of his new film directed by Puri Jagannadh was revealed. The film is titled Slum Dog 33 Temple Road. Vijay plays a blind character in the film.
To prepare for his sightless character, Vijay watched all the great performances of actors playing blind characters, from Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark to Naseeruddin Shah in Sparsh.
Said a source close to Vijay Sethupathi, “The director Puri Jagannadh advised Vijay to just play it instinctively. But Vijay insisted on doing his own research. He wanted to feel the dark world of a blind man.”
This writer asked Vijay Sethupathi if all this effort was worth the while for a potboiler.
He defended his dedication. “It doesn’t matter to me what the mood of a film is. Even if, as you say, it is a potboiler, it gets the same attention and focus from me. And please, don’t judge the director by his past record.”
