Since its inception, Mani Ratnam's upcoming magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: I, also called PS-1, is creating a buzz. Recently, the makers hosted a trailer launch event on September 6. Among many others, renowned actor Kamal Haasan also attended the trailer launch event. Interestingly, in his piece of the camera, the veteran actor shared some lesser-known information related to the upcoming project.

For the unversed, PS-1, which originated 30 years back, was planned by Mani Ratnam to be made with Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth in 1989. Interestingly, Hasaan that the roles that were offered to him and Rajinikanth. Kamal said, “Sivaji sir told me to cast Rajini as Vanthiyathevan. I told him that I wanted to play it, but he insisted that I played ArunmozhiVarman instead”.

On the other hand, the Vikram actor also spoke about his long friendship with Rajinikanth. He asserted, “cinema is a small family and there's no space and time for people to get jealous. Rajini and I knew it way back and that's the reason why we're still standing before you”.

Meanwhile, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who will be playing a pivotal character in the film, said, “Rajini and Kamal sir – (it is a) dream moment of having you both here. We have been students, admirers of you and continue to do this forever”, at the event.

Talking about the film, the upcoming Mani Ratnam directorial is slated for a worldwide release on September 30, 2022, in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The ensemble star cast of the film includes Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, and Jayaram, among others.

Written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, the story of Ponniyin Selvan is based on a fiction novel of the same name. The book revolves around the life of Rajaraja Chola I of the Chola dynasty.
