Indian superstar Prabhas is setting his sights on the international stage with his upcoming film Kalki 2898 AD, a sci-fi reimagining of Hindu mythology. In an interview with Deadline, Prabhas discussed the ambitious project, his desire to reach global audiences, and the responsibility he feels towards his fans. As per the report, Prabhas acknowledged his struggle to gain international recognition, but Kalki 2898 AD seems poised to change that. With a reported budget exceeding Rs. 600 crores ($72 million), it's estimated to be one of, if not the, most expensive Indian film ever made.
Backed by Vyjayanthi Movies production house, the film boasts a star-studded cast alongside Prabhas, including Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone (India's highest-paid actress in 2023), and Tamil icon Kamal Haasan.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD blends science fiction with the Hindu myth of Kalki, the prophesied tenth avatar of Vishnu who appears at the end of the Kali Yuga (the current age of darkness). The film's international aspirations were evident from the very beginning. Last year, it created history by becoming the first Indian project to launch its teaser at the San Diego Comic-Con 2023, then known under the working title Project K.
“The whole film is designed for international audiences,” Prabhas said. “That's the reason it has the highest budget and some of the finest actors in the country.”
The excitement of working with such a legendary cast is palpable in Prabhas' words. “I never thought I would get the opportunity to collaborate with actors like Amitabh Sir and Kamal Sir, let alone in the same film," he confesses. "When I heard about the project, I called the producer and said, 'Is this for real? This is a dream come true!'”
While Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry, has traditionally dominated India's international film presence, Kalki 2898 AD breaks the mould. Primarily shot in Telugu, it will be released simultaneously in five languages. This reflects a recent trend in Indian cinema – the rise of "Pan-Indian" films. These productions feature stars from various regional industries like Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam alongside their Bollywood counterparts.
