G5A Cinema House had a Mani Ratnam Retrospective in Mumbai from January 24 to 26. It saw the screening of some of the best films of the legendary filmmaker. There were also panel discussions featuring the filmmaker along with the artistes he has collaborated with over the years, including Santosh Sivan, Abhishek Bachchan, Bejoy Nambiar, Shaad Ali, Priyamani, etc.
During a panel discussion on Saturday January 25, Mani Ratnam was asked whether he would make political films or films with political themes like Roja, Bombay or Kannathil Muthamittal today.
To this, Ratnam said, “When I made Roja or Bombay, at that point of time, those were not really something which I was too worried about. I thought if I am honest and if I am reflecting what a normal person like me views, then I think that honesty will come through. You are not taking sides; you are not trying to propagate anything. It’s just an angst, a period, a call. So, I never had real fear. But every film got into trouble at the censors; that’s a different thing. That you have to battle.”
The filmmaker added, “But when I started the film, I didn’t for a second think that it will be a problem. Today, probably I will think twice before I think of it.”
