The much-anticipated release of Vikram's Thangalaan and Suriya's Kanguva has hit a major roadblock with the Madras High Court directing the films' production company, Studio Green, to deposit Rs 1 crore before the release of each film.

According to Live Law, the legal tangle stems from an ongoing case involving the late realtor and financier Arjunlal Sunderdas. An official assignee appointed by the High Court to handle Sunderdas' estate, who was declared insolvent, filed an execution petition against Studio Green. The production house had previously entered into a film production agreement with Sunderdas, but financial disputes arose.

Studio Green's Counterargument

Studio Green maintained that they had reached an agreement with Sunderdas to offset the financial dues by transferring the Hindi remake rights of three of their films. However, the court dismissed this argument, stating that there was no concrete evidence to support this claim.

Court's Verdict

The Madras High Court, in its ruling, determined that Studio Green had not complied with a previous order to pay a substantial sum to the official assignee. To ensure the recovery of the dues, the court directed the production company to deposit Rs 1 crore before the release of both Thangalaan and Kanguva.

Speaking of Thangalaan, it is directed by Pa. Ranjith. The Chiyaan Vikram starrer is scheduled for a worldwide release on August 15, 2024, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The music of the film is composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar.

Meanwhile, the makers of Kanguva recently dropped the trailer of the film on the occasion of director Siva’s birthday. The trailer promises a ruthless revenge drama starring Suriya and Bobby Deol. The film will be released on October 9.
