The makers of Kuladalli Keelyavudo replaced the singer in wake of backlash over alleged insult to Kannada.

The ongoing controversy surrounding singer Sonu Nigam has taken a significant turn, as the makers of the Kannada film Kuladalli Keelyavudo have decided to remove his track ‘Manasu Haadtade’ from the film’s album. The decision comes in response to Sonu Nigam’s recent remarks about the tragic Pahalgam terror attack when a young boy rudely requested for a song during the singer’s concert in Karnataka. The remark sparked widespread outrage, followed by which the Kannada Chamber of Commerce has also refused to cooperate with the singer.

Directed by K Ramnarayan, the film was set to feature the romantic track sung by Nigam. However, amid growing criticism and public sentiment, the team has chosen to dissociate from the singer. According to a report in Deccan Herald, the production team released a statement that read, “There is no doubt that Sonu Nigam is a good singer. But we are very upset by how he spoke about Kannada recently at a concert.” The film’s director echoed this sentiment, stating, “We cannot tolerate this insult that Sonu Nigam has done to Kannada, so we have removed the song.”

In response, the team has brought in singer Chethan to re-record the song, which has been composed by Manomurthy with lyrics penned by renowned writer Yogaraj Bhat. The producers are now in the process of updating the soundtrack ahead of the film’s release. Producer Santosh Kumar has reportedly taken a strong stand, vowing not to collaborate with Sonu Nigam on any future projects.

The backlash against Nigam escalated when an FIR was filed following his comments made in the context of a live performance. Attempting damage control, the singer took to social media to express remorse and clarify his position regarding the Kannada community. In a heartfelt note, he emphasized his longstanding bond with the Kannada music industry.

He later posted another message on Instagram that read, “Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always.”

Despite his apology, the sentiment on ground remains mixed, with many expressing disappointment, and calling for accountability. As of now, there has been no further response from Nigam regarding the removal of his song from Kuladalli Keelyavudo.
