Nag Ashwin directorial Kalki 2898 AD starring Deepika Padukone, Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, has landed itself in legal trouble over a rising feud between the overseas distributions and producers Vyjayanthi Movies. After the film’s release in popular regions like US and Europe, a leaked email has allegedly exposed a major showdown between the duo over monetary issues despite the film reportedly earning over Rs. 1000 crores worldwide as per Box office figures.
An email leak between the producers Vyjayanthi Movies and US distributors was reported in Hindustan Times wherein the former has accused the latter of cheating and holding back payments. A source was also quoted in this HT report, confirming the details as the source went on to add, “The US and Europe distributors are the same, they have cheated the producers. The film made $1.3 million in the regions, according to trackers. They have given the producers ₹5 crore advance and are now claiming it has not made even that and made only ₹3 crore. The producers plan to proceed legally now because they’re left with no other choice. The distributors haven’t even responded to the mail and have leaked it instead. The producers will wait for a response before proceeding with legal action.”
Despite the multiple accusations and blame games that have started doing the rounds followed by this email leak, the producers and distributors have maintained a staunch silence on the matter.
Speaking about Kalki 2898 AD, the film is a futuristic post-apocalyptic dystopian drama that aims to revive the long-lost Indian mythological prophecy of Kalki arriving to save the goodness in earth by fighting off evil. The film features Deepika Padukone as the subject SUM-80 who is allegedly pregnant as a part of the experiment with many believing that she may be the mother of this messiah Kalki. With Amitabh Bachchan as the immortal Ashwathama, Prabhas as bounty hunter Bhairava, and Kamal Haasan as the autocratic Supreme Yaskin, the film released worldwide in theatres on June 5 in multiple languages including Hindi.
