Malayalam actor Indrajith Sukumaran’s recent crime thriller Dheeram has encountered an unexpected hurdle in its international distribution after being denied censor approval across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The decision, which affects the film’s planned theatrical release in the United Arab Emirates and other GCC nations, was shared directly by Indrajith on social media, leaving fans and industry watchers disappointed.

In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Indrajith wrote, “Was so looking forward to being in UAE on release day and watching the movie with you all, but deeply regret to inform you that DHEERAM will not be released in UAE due to censor ban. Thanks to everyone who has watched the movie and for sending in those lovely reviews. Grateful.. #Dheeram #releaseban.” His statement reflects both his disappointment over the sudden setback and appreciation for the support the film has already received from audiences.

The GCC region is a significant overseas market for Malayalam cinema, making the censor ban a notable blow for Dheeram’s producers and cast. The reasons behind the censor board’s decision have not been publicly disclosed, and details regarding the specific objections raised remain unclear. Nevertheless, the development underscores ongoing challenges that Indian films sometimes face in meeting international certification standards.
Directed by debut filmmaker Jithin T. Suresh, Dheeram falls within the crime investigation thriller genre and features a talented ensemble cast. Despite positive domestic reviews, its absence from GCC theaters means it will miss out on a key segment of the global audience for Indian cinema.
