The court had earlier declined to grant an interim injunction against the documentary and has decided to hear the main suit.

Actor and producer Dhanush has taken legal action against Netflix, Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan over the unauthorized use of behind-the-scenes (BTS) visuals from his 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the docu-series Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. His production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, has filed a civil suit seeking Rs. 1 crore in damages over the copyright violation.

Wunderbar Films have released an affidavit

The court had earlier declined to grant an interim injunction against the documentary, as it was released on November 18, 2024. However, it has now decided to hear the main suit on April 9. In its affidavit, Wunderbar Films accused cinematographer Ravi Varman of neglecting the entire cast and crew while filming Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in favor of focusing exclusively on actress Nayanthara. "The fourth respondent (Mr. Sivan) unnecessarily began focusing his attention only on the third respondent (Ms. Nayanthara), ignoring the other cast and crew of the movie by taking multiple re-takes of scenes which involved the third respondent in order to make sure that only she gives her best performance and not prioritizing the other actors,” the affidavit of Wunderbar read.

Nayanthara’s post calling out Dhanush

The matter fuelled up into a major controversy when Nayanthara addressed the legal matter in public by sharing a social media post against Dhanush. The actress insisted that despite continuous follow-up with Dhanush and his legal time, prior to the release of the documentary, the latter continued to remain unresponsive. She further alleged, that the actor-producer was carrying this out of personal vendetta, which prompted them to insist that they have used only footages shot from personal devices in the documentary.

Dhanush’s legal team argues that the use of BTS visuals without permission constitutes a clear breach of intellectual property rights, reinforcing their demand for compensation. With the hearing set for April 9, the entertainment industry is keenly watching the outcome of this high-profile copyright dispute.
