Just like Red, the colour 'Black' has also made it to many a Hindi film titles. In the initial days, it was 'Kala' that was more often used than its English counterpart in film titles. So you had titles like Dev Anand starrer Kala Bazaar or the Big B starrer Kala Patthar which dealt with the lives of workers in a coal-mine.

In the recent past Sanjay Leela Bhansali showed us the world of a deaf, mute and blind girl in his award-winning film Black while Anurag Kashyap recreated the horrific serial blasts that rocked the city of Mumbai on a Black Friday way back in 1993.

In more ways than one, just like how it is in real life, the colour Black has been used to signify darkness, gloom and depression even in our films.

It's that time of the year when Indians across the world celebrate the Festival of Colours-Holi. Be it throwing water balloons from the terrace of your building or smearing 'Gulaal' on the faces of your near and dear ones or even dunking your friends in a pool of coloured water, each one of us at some point of time or the other has indulged in these fun-filled activities during Holi.

Bollywood too has always celebrated Holi in a grand way be it through its films or even its filmy parties where the biggest of stars come in white and get completely drenched in coloured water. Besides incorporating Holi related sequences in films, Bollywood films have also used various colors in its film titles. This Holi, Bollywood Hungama takes a trip down memory lane and recollects some film titles which sparkled with a dash of colour.

Gulaal

Any Holi is incomplete without the use of 'Gulaal' and hence it indeed seems a pleasant coincidence that a film titled Gulaal is releasing in the Holi week. The colour 'Red' makes its presence felt the most during the festival of Holi and hence it comes as no surprise that even our filmmakers decided to use the word 'Red' (Lal in Hindi) in some of their films.

While 'Lal' has been used in numerous old films such as Lal Quila, Lal Bangla, Lal Rumal and Lal Pari, the most prominent film that comes to our mind is the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Lal Baadshah. The forgettable flick can be best remembered for Amitabh dancing in a bright red suit with the much younger Shilpa Shetty.

In the recent past, our films have also started using English words in their titles and with time the word 'Lal 'was replaced by its English counterpart Red. So you have films like Red, which starred Aftab Shivdasani along with Celina Jaitley and Amrita Arora in which the colour red was used in abundance and the lesser known but highly controversial Red Swastik starring sex-symbol Sherlyn Chopra. While in the former, the colour Red signified the passion of love, in the latter Red signified danger.

While the earlier days saw films such as Safed Jhooth and Safed Haathi making use of the Hindi name for colour White in its titles, in the recent past we've had films like Mr. Black Mr. White and Black & White that not just used the word white in its title but also coloured the title White.

In Subhash Ghai's Black & White, the two protagonists, newcomer Anurag Sinha and Anil Kapoor, by way of their morals and philosophy represented the two colours Black and White respectively. To further justify their characters, Anurag was given mostly dark black costumes in the film while Anil was seen in sparkling white kurta-pyjamas through most of the film.

While Blue Umbrella, as the title suggests, revolves around a small village girl and her favorite big Blue Umbrella, the forthcoming biggie Blue starring Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif is a film that's mostly shot in the deep blue oceans and hence the title Blue.

One will have to wait and watch if in the days to come some more filmmakers decide on adding that das of colour to their film titles.
