TWICE as a group has carved its distinct position in the K-pop music industry. Each of the nine members when come together presents delightful performances, catchy tunes and a memorable experience. Each member has her distinct style, which is slowly beginning to unravel, be it in her contribution to the group’s music releases or solo ventures. The journey of exploring their solo talents began with NAYEON’s solo EP IM NAYEON”. The next member to go solo is the group’s leader JIHYO. The songstress made her solo debut on August 18, 2023, with the 7-track EP Zone. Each track is a distinct flavour of musical and lyrical goodness.

TWICE’s JIHYO makes breezy solo debut brimming with life, love and heartbreak in Zone – Album Review

1. KILLIN’ ME GOOD
JIHYO opens the EP Zone with a dashing start. ‘Killin’ Me Good’ sets the tone of the EP and gives a hint as to what is to come next. The song is all about the pop and dance genres. Right from the start to the finish, the energy of the song is constantly pulsating with smart innuendos (“Something your whole body feels/Something that I can't explain/But so special”) and JIHYO’s smooth vocals. Jihyo smartly employs English lyrics for the chorus so as to reach a wider audience. Watch this song become the next viral sensation on social media. The music video itself tells the audience what to expect from the rest of the album.

2. TALKIN’ ABOUT IT (ft 24kGoldn)
After a stunning confession and the start of a heady romance, the story in this EP zooms out a little. ‘Talkin’ About It’ is an unapologetic and heady declaration of a love that is going at a high speed - “And everyone, everyone, everyone/Tryna know about our life, ayy/'Cause they know, yeah, they know that we're rare/And we ain't gonna happen twice.” People are going to talk about each and everything, so it is upon us whom we want to listen to. The song is captured in a cinematic feel which reflects the grand scale of emotions and the ‘being in the moment’ aspect.

3. CLOSER
While a certain musical duo has already become synonymous with the word ‘Closer’, JIHYO brings a new meaning to it. ‘Closer’ is a track which speaks about all-entrancing and hypnotic emotions that run high and make one want to jump into things without a second thought. The dance-pop with reverb vocals accentuating in the background captures the essence of the lyrics beautifully - “I don't know what you mean to me/What I mean to you/I don't care, make it easy/Tell me where this is heading”.

4. WISHING ON YOU
When you are in love, you would want to spend each moment with your loved one. One often wonders what the other person is doing. There can be moments of doubt and confusion as well. JIHYO captures these feelings in the track ‘Wishing on You’. Making a wish with a genie is a commonly known idea and JIHYO uses that to present a dreamlike track “What do I mean to you?/Do you think of me sometimes?/The more I think about it, the more I get dizzy”

5. DON’T WANNA GO BACK (ft Heize)
After a rather tumultuous dating relationship narrated in the previous tracks, the mood of the EP now changes to that of sadness and heartbreak. In ‘Don’t Wanna Go Back’, JIHYO picks Heize to sing about this beautiful heartbreak ballad filled with remorse, regret and pain “Struggling into each other's memories/It's a far place to walk back/Just cry, this will be our last time/It's late enough, but bye bye now”. The song is a beautiful rendition done through pop-like elements mixed with the tone of a ballad.

6. ROOM
‘Room’ employs the imagery of departure and walking away to signal the finality of a breakup. While expressing remorse, JIHYO symbolises the relationship as a room that one would not return to - “The meaning of time that passed by/I hope it is beautiful as it is/I'm not coming back to this room”. The song sports a groovy theme but also signals hope that there will be closure soon.

7. NIGHTMARE
When you hear the word ‘nightmare’, all sorts of scary things come to mind. JIHYO employs the idea of a nightmare to sing about a hurtful memory or a presence so strong that it becomes a nightmare - “I bother you one by one/Over your scared face, curse on you/Can't escape, can't escape, I'm your nightmare”. The gothic-like track features a declarative spirit and vivid imagery of extinguishing another presence.

TWICE JIHYO describes a heady love affair in her solo debut EP, Zone. Starting from the indulgent and entrancing start of the love affair, she goes on to chart the progression of that love. It goes from being all things sugar and spice to not-so-nice in just three tracks. She tells the story of a love that began on a promising note, but the lovers had to part ways because of the hurt and pain within their relationship.

Each track highlights a different stage of the romance, while the first four speak about the initial stages where the protagonist is in a rosy world and basking in the glory of the relationship, the next two paint a picture of a painful separation. Using imagery of empty streets, walking away, a closed-off room, she describes the innermost feelings the protagonist felt during the separation. Concluding the EP with a gothic touch, JIHYO speaks about the aftereffects of the breakup. Comparing the presence to a nightmare, she goes on to explain how hurtful and impacting the relationship has been.

Each track is a shade apart in terms of music, lyrics and ideas used to present the main theme of the song. Also showing off her vocal skills in English as a soloist, JIHYO presents a complete package for the listeners. TWICE as a group is known for catchy choruses in their songs. JIHYO understands this well for we find that each track sports a recurring chorus line that captures one’s attention instantly. She dabbles into RnB, pop, synth and even pop ballads, thus charting a successful map of her musical versatility as a soloist. JIHYO’s Zone cements the image of the songstress as a truly impactful and multifaceted artist. Like seven individual colours that come together to form a rainbow, Zone is a rainbow showcasing her strengths through seven perceptible tracks.
