Squid Game: The Challenge contestants threaten Netflix with lawsuit over injuries, hypothermia and nerve damage

Following the breakout show Squid Game, Netflix announced in 2022 that they are bringing Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition series based on the hit 2021 South Korean survival thriller. As Netflix noted, Squid Game: The Challenge will be “the biggest reality competition series ever,” hosting the largest cast and offering the largest lump sum cash prize of $4.56 million. However, now some of the contestants have threaten to file a lawsuit claiming injuries such as hypothermia, nerve damage and bad working conditions which resulted in poor health and safety standards.

The British personal injury firm Express Solicitors announced on November 23 that they are representing constestants who are seeking compensation for their experience on the Netflix reality series. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, CEO Daniel Slade said in a statement, “We have sent letters of claim on behalf of contestants injured in this show. From what we’ve been told, they pushed the boundaries of safety in the name of entertainment. Production companies need to ensure that health and safety standards on their shows don’t leave people at risk of harm.”

Right now, the firm represents two contestants but is in conversation with other potential claimants. While they have taken the initial step, they are working gathering further evidence and will file lawsuit if it is needed.

Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality TV version of Squid Game, Netflix’s original survival thriller from South Korea. The new competition series has 456 players from around the world, competing for the prize money of $4.65 million was filmed in the U.K.

Meanwhile, the global hit series was also renewed for a second season at Netflix. The new season was confirmed in 2022 alongside the introduction of a new deadly character: Cheol Su, boyfriend of Young Hee, the motion-sensing animatronic doll with black hair in low short pigtails.
